As a big fan of Elliot Raff's Khans Expanded Cube, I was fascinated by the idea of expanding upon just one set using cards outside its respective block. Examples include Morphs from Onslaught block, Raid in Ixalan, and a plethora of flavorful yet functional inclusions from Magic's history. I am fan of building three-colour decks in limited (especially wedge colours) and I love the kaiju aesthetic of Ikoria's monsters. As such, I wanted a draft experience that captures the essence of the world while having exciting choices to make during both draft and gameplay.
While this is mostly Ikoria and Commander 2020, over time I would like to add from different sets. A neat inclusion from the lists above are the wedge partners from the C20 decks, like Ukkima, Stalking Shadow and Cazur, Ruthless Stalker. However, looking at each partner through the lens of a draft format, one sticks out as being pretty useless without his dog: Haldan, Avid Arcanist. To remedy this, I am testing two house rules for the draft:
Players get TWO first picks.Slightly similar to Battlebond limited, and because I plan to create pre-made packs, each partner pair will be seeded in the same pack together. This rule is currently untested, but I think the partners create exciting decisions to make during draft: "Do I commit to a partner pair and a theme this early?" as well as being exciting first picks later in the draft when you've already committed to a strategy. Time will tell if this rule serves the gameplay well. All the ally-colour beasts still play well into their respective two-colour themes, e.g. Shabraz, the Skyshark with UW Flyers, Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel with GW Vigilance, etc. And I doubt anyone will be against snatching a Triome and Drannith Magistrate in their first pack.
Speaking of the Magistrate, our boy will be a foil once again to the Companions, because:
Companions will work as written (pre-errata)As Sniffygull wrote in their cube, the new rule makes most of them almost unplayable, and once again, interesting deck-building decisions should be welcome in this cube. Committing to a deck-building restriction to use a companion should prove interesting.
