TLDR:

  • A souped-up masters set draft
  • Uncommon spells cast with rare lands
  • Strong, overlapping themes based on common game actions

Themes:

gw - Tokens

gu - ETB/Ramp

wu - Flicker

wb - Attrition/GY Recursion

ub - Discard/Reanimator

ur - Spells/Loot

br - Aristocrats

bg - GY Creatures

rg - Big 'n Fast

rw - Battalion/Battle Cry

What to Expect:

  • 6-10 player draft, swiss rounds
  • Peasant/artisan rarity for spells, no restrictions for fixing lands
  • High, flat power level with a small number of power outliers and cards with more specific build-around requirements
  • Medium-fast game speed
  • One of each of the following classifications seeded into each pack before the rest is filled out randomly: white, blue, black, red, green, multicolor, colorless, land
  • 2-4 color decks, tend towards 2 colors plus a splash
  • Lean heavily into card interactions that center around common game actions like drawing cards, casting spells, and attacking with creatures as well as cards changing zones.

Design Goals:

Most of this cube's high level design is based on cards moving to another zone(sometimes that zone is the red zone). By designing around play patterns that are both common and easily overlapping, I hope to create a draft experience where players can largely draft cohesive decks with cards that easily play off each other. I want to strongly support generic strategies like aggro, control, ramp, and midrange as well as more specific build-around and engine-building game plans.

Things Left Out:

- Cards that are too under costed:
Cards like Sol Ring and Reanimate allow for games that are basically over before an opponent has done anything
- Cards/effects that can win the game on their own:
Skullclamp, Palace Jailer, and cards with monarch/initiative can generate a ton of value on their own without very much effort.
The point of this cube is to build an engine or strategy from several cards that creates interesting, emergent, and powerful gameplay
- Cards that are too all or nothing:
Cards like Fire Covenant can be either insane or terrible based on the board, and Vizier of Remedies is only good next to very specific cards.
2 card hard-combos are decidedly too strong for this environment.
- Spells that tutor for spells:
Demonic tutor is technically peasant, and Vile Entomber is pretty cool, but I both don't want players playing the same exact cards every game. I also want players spending less time shuffling and more time playing for a faster paced experience.
Cards that search for lands are ok for now to ensure that players have decent mana bases
