Welcome to version 2 of the kinda budget alt art cube! This cube does what it says on the tin: only alternate art and preferably each card comes in at under $2. We haven't quite succeeded at that second part, but we're pretty close. The lands are assumed to be proxies, but for better gameplay and drafting are a necessary inclusion. We've had enough sets pass now that a redesign was in order. The previous cube had to rely heavily on multicolor cards because that's what was available. We've trimmed that back significantly. There's still a fairly strong multicolor presence, but that's mostly a result of severe lack of options for colorless cards.
This cube features a reasonably flat power curve, emphasizes speed, and is balanced between synergy and raw power drafting. There are archetypes for each color pair:
WU - Tempo weenies. Small creatures that grind out incremental card advantage backed by spells to keep your opponents bigger creatures off the board
WB - Lifegain. A high synergy deck with combo potential. The more life you gain the more you can convert into cards, damage, and interaction.
WR - Legendary. A host of characters from across Magic's history look to team up and beat down.
WG - Tokens. Do you love having too much stuff on your side of the table? Make as much stuff as you can and then buff them up.
UB - Ninja blink. Combine ninjas with powerful ETB effects to grind out your opponents
UR - Spells! You cast spells.
UG - Lands! Do you love repeatedly replaying strip mine in vintage cube? If so, you're a terrible person and you absolutely cannot do that here. You can make them fly here.
BR - Sacrifice? Maybe. Try at your own risk. There's plenty of good stuff in this color pair, but the theme is less developed. Also Maybe. There are some pieces. More testing is required.
BG - Self mill. Stock your graveyard and then empty it again for fun and profit.
RG - Mid-range. Ramp out big creatures and dominate the board.
duskmourne update
Mostly standard swaps, taking out some underperforming cards and putting in new cards that will underperform.
This update is perhaps the start of a sea change though. We're going to be scaling back the budget requirements a little bit. We're not going crazy here, but instead of a mostly strict 2 buck limit there will be times when we go up to the 5-6 dollar range for cards which significantly reinforce archetypes or offer uniquely fun play patterns.
For instance UW has been conceived as a tempo deck, but there wasn't much to actually pull you into that color pair so Reflector Mage and Spell Queller have been added to make the color pair a more appealing option instead of just something you end up in.
That said, the tempo experiment might just be doomed and it's possible that archetype transforms into something more traditional like control. time will tell.
The addition of balance also makes us want to consider adding the 2 mana rocks back in as we would like to get our colorless count higher. Ideally this would mean cutting a multicolor card from each of the color pairs, but we only have 5 mana rocks and 10 color pairs and we don't have an additional 5 colorless cards to add yet. Maybe this could be Dr Who talismans, but it remains unclear on how we're going to treat unique art for universes beyond though I'd lean towards "sparingly"
