A CUBE FOR EVERYONE

I want this cube to be as welcoming as possible to players who have grasped just the basics of Magic while still being engaging and fun for highly experienced players. I believe that this is best accomplished by having a lower-curving environment with decision making about interacting with your opponent's game pieces being at the forefront of gameplay. My reasoning is that such an environment will naturally reward good habits across the drafting, deck building, and gameplay portions of the experience, which will help develop those habits in newer players while giving experienced players a lot of opportunities for skill expression. While this will advantage experienced players, ideally it won't advantage them to such a degree that new players feel shut out of ever winning.

Design Goals:

  • Accessible and fun for players of all levels of enfranchisement/experience
  • Low complexity, high interaction cards focusing on "good, clean magic"
  • A "core set" power level draft environment
  • Board states should always be easily readable, and board stalls should be minimal.
  • Ideally should never invoke a question needing someone with Judge-level rules knowledge to answer.
  • Accommodate as few as 6 and as many as 10 drafters without any strategies being kneecapped by variance in lower pod size drafts (i.e. not drafting every card doesn't ruin anything).

Inclusion Constraints:

  • No DFCs or Split cards
  • Disqualified mechanics: Banding, Phasing, Bestow, Mutate, Protection, Regenerate, and Adventures as these effects are rife with complicated or non-obvious rules interactions.
  • No "similar, but different" mechanics that are effectively the same as other mechanics already present in the cube, but with a very slight variation, such as Jump-start and Retrace being effectively "Flashback, but...", or Shroud being "Hexproof, but..."
  • Does not create -1/-1 counters due to their non-obvious interaction with +1/+1 counters, as well as for clarity of board state. If there's a counter on a creature, it is certainly a +1/+1 counter.
  • Does not generate a trinket artifact token other than Clue
  • Does not set new base power and/or toughness
  • Must have a printing that is not meaningfully different than its oracle text. For example: Arc Trail does not have a version that has the text "any target" and so is disqualified from inclusion. A counterexample would be Dauntless Bodyguard, which does not have a printing that says "when Dauntless Bodyguard enters" as opposed to "enters the battlefield", as those are not meaningfully different.
  • If it has a non-Evergreen ability, it must have a printing that includes reminder text.

Mainboard Changelist+48, -48

The changes included in this update are, roughly in descending order of the quantity of card swaps the change created:

  • Change white's token to the Soldier, which allowed me to switch Ajani Goldmane for the significantly more powerful Elspeth, Sun's Champion and also get rid of the only unique token in the cube. I think this change brings White's general power level up somewhat to be more in-line with the rest of the cube.
  • Remove Thopter and Servo token producers
  • Swapping out a handful cards that were extreme power-outliers on both ends, notably Shivan Dragon, Serra Angel, and Bring to Light on the low end and Rancor and Umezawa's Jitte on the high end.
  • Minor reduction in the density of broadly applicable, cheap removal by exchanging for more narrow or more color-intensive options
  • Give Blue a distinct creature token with the Faerie.
