Just some cards from RVR to consider adding.

A few changes to put through this time.

First, the swap to Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle from Mistmoon Griffin is an easy one, Teshar is both a cleric and a bird, which have themes in this cube and has added upside of some artifact synergy. I do want to put a little bit more importance on artifacts, so this card fits the bill perfectly. I may bring something back in that cares about graveyard order in the future, as I like that rule (you shouldn't be reordering your graveyard anyway!)

Withered Wretch was either a bear with tribal synergy or a complete hose against graveyard decks. Undead Gladiator fits in nicely instead as a potential turn two cycling option.

I'm cutting the two-card combo of Tireless Tribe and About Face to bring in a little bit more recursion for white in the form of Sevinne's Reclamation, and a haymaker for red decks with Fireblast. Mono-red is in a good spot at the moment, this shouldn't push it too much higher.

Fixing is getting a bit of a bump-up with the checkland set (e.g. Sulfur Falls), replacing the tapped pain land cycle (Caldera Lake)

Cloud Key or Helm of Awakening were the two potential options to go in, and I opted for the one that is slower for storm decks, just to keep them in check.

Forgotten Ancient fills a similar role to Hunting Moa and just looks like it will feel better in most decks.

Opalescence was a weird card, basically only being picked up by all-in enchantress decks. Noble Purpose is a bit more flexible in just giving all your creatures pseudo-lifelink, in a cube where lifegain is a rare effect. Enchantress should still be on the same power level as before.

Next update may be a bit of an artifact and fixing buff, I've got a few cards on my maybeboard to consider.

I'm adding to the artifact count in the cube to strengthen a couple of cards. The volver cycle is the easiest to cut, as they mainly were sideboard or the 23rd card in a deck. I think the only one I'd miss in draft is Necravolver

Brass Herald is my initial choice over the more aggressively costed Adaptive Automaton, although I may end up adding automaton instead, depending on the play rate of herald. Herald is my first choice to make sure aggressive tribal decks don't get out of control.

Cabal ritual over Dark Ritual serves to slow black down a little bit early game, and stop turn 2 Tourach.

A few changes to adjust balance.

Monoskelion can do what Ticking Gnomes does, but leaves a body behind. This a pretty straightforward replacement for me.

Phyrexian Gargantua replaces a high MV slot in black that was previously occupied by Phage the Untouchable.

Ancient Spider was just an all around neat card, but didn't really do anything except hose flier decks. Armadillo Cloak has been in my maybeboard since creating this cube and should be a perfectly splashable card in green and white decks. Ancient Spider may make a comeback if the easy access to lifelink proves too strong.

Other future changes on the menu:
Cabal Ritual over Dark Ritual removes some explosiveness from black decks, and works a little bit better for the mid-range black decks.
Blazing Rootwalla is ready to slot in over one of the other red one drops.
I am looking at increasing the number of artifact creatures in the cube. Current shortlist is Diamond Lion, Liquimetal Torque, Bottle Gnomes, and Teeka's Dragon.

Finally, I'm aware there is a bug with the playtest function in this cube that has been around for almost a year that doesn't let you get to deck-building. This means I can't see the online draft stats for my cube and I'm pretty sure the training algorithm of the bots is broken, so they are continuously passing the recently added cards. I've been trying to contact CubeCobra support for a few months to get this fixed, but haven't heard anything yet.

Another new old-border card to add to this cube, Tourach, Dread Cantor ticks all the boxes for what I am looking for in cards that I want in this cube.

When evaluating cards to bring into a pre-modern environment I usually judge them based on the following criteria:

  • The art has to match the aesthetic of the other cards in the cube
  • Mechanics would be acceptable on cards printed before 2003
  • Is not overly powerful in the cube meta

With these considerations, Tourach is a shoo-in and can synergize nicely with ub or wb decks.

Phage was the most sensible choice to cut, as she is exceptionally difficult to cast, and most of the time sat in a sideboard.

I've not made changes to this cube in a while as I've been carefully considering whether or not to add modern cards printed in the old border from TSR/MH2/MH1.

I've decided to include a small handful of these newer cards that fit with the overall powerlevel and old school design to bolster some areas of my cube that I feel are lacking.

Feldon of the Third Path is a great example of a card at the right powerlevel that fills a gap in red-black decks.

I am considering other cards but need to test the changes slowly.

Adding Sylvan Library to increase the power of gu and gw decks, which prefer a slightly slower game.
