Strong/Staples:
None.
Interest:
Ivora, Insatiable Heir (U): It becomes much better once you can get the first trigger, but as a card that fits into Madness (Red’s set of 2-mana Madness enablers is actually pretty weak) as well as being a Quirion Dryad-type card for Blue-X control decks with looters, I really like this.
Similar:
Anep, Vizier of Hazoret (U): A generally better Gila Courser, but I don’t see a lot of worlds where this is able to exert twice even if it’s able to survive combat.
Goblin Surprise (U): Functional reprint of You See a Pair of Goblins with better name and flavor text.
Scholar of Combustion (C): I think I like this better than Ardent Elementalist, but slightly worse than Pinnacle Monk. This does allow you to pseudo-flashback Lightning Bolt on T5 (whereas Monk can’t do that until T6), but that’s a pretty minor upside for being worse with counterspells and less flexible.
Unique/Synergy:
Cleon, Merry Champion (U): A mooo-Red Iroas’s Champion with upside. Nice signpost if you’re trying to support a Heroic/Double Strike deck.
Dragon Trainer (U): We now have 3 5-mana 5/5s with both haste and trample. This is 5-mana for 4/4 worth of (better) evasion, but no haste. So unless you’re expecting to blink it, I think this falls a little short. But in that deck, it obviously has a very high ceiling.
Firespitter Whelp (U): In a pure spells deck, It’s not as good as Guttersnipe and a Wind Drake isn’t that interesting (even in Red, where we’ve apparently had Sarkhan’s Whelp for years). So this really only makes sense in a tempo-y deck that has a noncreature subtheme. But in that deck I imagine it’ll do decent work.
General Kreat, the Boltbringer (U): A peasant Goblin Rabblemaster-ish, but obviously a lot weaker. The power of this is going to turn pretty heavily on whether you have 1- and 2-drop goblins that can attack pseudo-profitably the turn you play this. I think the fact that things like Dragon Fodder have been crept out by cards like Rally at the Hornburg means this card will not be as good as you might think.
Mindsparker (U): An interesting downshift. But color-hosing cards are often disfavored by cube designers. With that said, this is a relatively minor color-hate effect and I think this is the only Red 3-mana-or-less creature with permanent first strike and 3+ power. The body being decent on its own reminds me somewhat of Sandstalker Moloch.
No Interest:
Battlesong Berserker (U): Frontier Warmonger is going to provide a better bonus (and similar stats).
Boltwave (U): Essentially another copy of Lava Spike.
Bulk Up (U): The high cost of the flashback makes me think this is just a minor improvement over Unleash Fury.
Courageous Goblin (C): Floor is too low and the ceiling isn’t very high.
Cracking Cyclops (C): Making Kiln Fiend more expensive, but not that much more resistant to removal does not strike me as a winning strategy.
Fiery Annihilation (U): A minor improvement over Soul Sear, but I think you’d rather have Ghostfire Slice.
Goblin Boarders (C): We have multiple 4/s3 for 3-mana with no setup as well as Coastline Marauders.
Goblin Negotiation (U): I don’t think the cost makes sense (e.g., 6-mana to deal 2 damage and create 2 1/1 tokens isn’t great). I think I prefer Form a Posse, which hasn’t been widely played.
Gorehorn Raider (C): Doesn’t compare favorably to Flametongue Kavu or any of the Charging Monstrosaurs.
Hearts on Fire (C): I like Coordinated Assault or Weapon Surge better.
Hidetsugu’s Second Rite (U): Rare downshift. Outside of some random combo (probably involving a Rare), I don’t see how this makes sense.
Incinerating Blast (C): If you want card advantage on a big Red spell, I think the recent Impossible Inferno is just beter.
Shivan Dragon (U): A long-awaited downshift that has probably been power-crept out for years. Amethyst Dragon and Rorix Bladewing are both probably just better (and Furnace Hellkite was already close to Shivan). But we can now cube Serra Angel versus Shivan Dragon.
Slumbering Cerberus (U): The 2 toughness makes this unlikely to survive combat, putting aside this functions as a punisher card.
Sower of Chaos (C): I’d probably prefer Ballista Watcher, though this does seem to be an upgrade over Siegebreaker Giant.
Strongbox Raider (U): I think you’d get more mileage out of Crimson Fleet Commodore.
