I have been updating tags for the Cube.
Burn - is for spells that can specifically deal damage to a player. If a spell can only hurt creatures, the tag is not applied.
Kill - is for spells that can destroy a creature by any means. Obviously, Black creature removal effects make up the majority, but also Red spells that deal damage to only creatures. Spells that cause -X/-X are also tagged with this.
Tricks - is for spells that will allow a creature to survive combat. So, obviously green BOOSTing spells go here, but also -X/-X spells are also included, and white spells that prevent damage, and other combat tricks. (including the unremarkable Blue -X/-0 cards) Tap effects are not tagged with this because they can't be applied in combat anymore.
Pacifism - is for those enchantments that stop creatures from attacking / blocking, or O-Ring like effects that will remove a creature until the Enchantment leaves the field.
Freeze - is for spells that tap down creatures.
I've created a custom card using Glass Golem.
If you pull GG from a pack in real life, it is not a vanilla creature. I gave it an ability sticker:
2, Sac this creature: Deal X damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures, where X is its power.
When you make your own Cube, you can make up the rules. So if I want to play with a weird custom card, it is allowed.
I'll keep it there until an appropriate Ravnica card is printed.
Gate Colossus is on the chopping block.
The more I think about it, the crappier it seems.
At best, if you pulled 5 gates, it would come out for 3 CMC, but you would never be able to get it out on turn 3 (you'd need to have all 5 gates in play). The earliest it would come out is turn 4, but not then either, because gates come into play tapped, so you could only play it on turn 5.
It has the plus side that it can't be chump blocked, but you'd have to remember NOT to play that last Gate (if you even pulled it) if you wanted to use that last effect to put it on top of your library.
Then you could pay 3. Feels like too much BS and a lot of false hope, which I am trying to avoid.
As much as I liked the original Hunted cycle for this Cube, since you only get 5 rares in Limited, if you were unlucky enough to pull two or more of the Hunted Creatures, you would be at a disadvantage, I think.
So, I'm adding three of the Finales. They're always good because they scale, and if you go really long, casting it for 12 mana will win you the game, most likely.
Utvara Hellkite is there to help Red end games. As I like to say, "If it costs 8 mana, it better win me the game." But the fact that it doesn't have Haste or other protections makes it fair enough.
Admittedly, Planewide Celebration probably won't win you the game, but there are plenty of things it can do no matter what the status of the board state. Plus, it's there for flavor.
Gavin Verhey made a video about Hexproof saying they're trying to avoid putting them on small creatures. Ledgewalker is the only small creatures that has Hexproof in my Cube, so I think I'll cut it.
I don't want to give players false hope. There really isn't a Voltron "Hexproof + Aura/Equipment" strategy in the Cube, so that's another reason to remove it.
Plus, I was looking for a few more Reach cards. While "Reach for the Sky" is not a Ravnica card, the Cactusfolk look like something the Simic might have created.
Recently I've been tinkering with my Cube based on what MaRo said they are doing to the new sets in the future. Some types of cards and being moved from common to uncommon, while some keywords are being pumped up or pumped down in appearance.
https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/nuts-and-bolts-16-play-boosters
The number of First Strike cards is being cut down, for example. Also, more and more cards with Reach are being printed.
I feel like I have too many fliers, so I decided to cut these three fliers for non-flying things.
Not everything that MaRo or Nizzahon suggest will be followed. I like equipment, so I'm keeping all the equipment I've added. Both of them suggest cutting Land Destruction cards. I have a friend that loves blowing up lands, so they're going to stay. (But, I did shrink the number of Land Destruction cards in the cube a long time ago.)
Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd like to remove cards that have more Pips in the casting cost. There's so few already, maybe I can slim it down some more.
I want to add more Coercion effects like suggested in MaRo's recent article.
This is it. It is done. I have to say - this Cube is complete.
Here are the changes that I had prepared.
I still have a few extra cards that I'd like to add.
I'm waiting for 3 cards from the Clue game, but I also want to add.
Cold Case Cracker
Slice form the Shados
Extract a Confession
These updates will happen once I have the cards in my hand.
-Ice Over will be replaced by Dramatic Accusation. They're the same basic effect.
-Cruel Finality will be replaced by Cerebral Confiscation. CC is a better Mind Rot and Mind Rot is always a decent card in Limited.
-Oblivion Ring will be replaced by Makeshift Binding. It's a very similar effect, but I wish it hit non-land permanents. Maybe I'll further replace it in the future.
-Batwing Brume will be replaced by Afterlife Insurance. I think AI is a fair card for 2cmc, and it draws you a card.
-Bioshift will be replaced by Snakeform. (Simic Watermark) Bioshift would be a terrible top deck, I think Snakeform will be more versatile.
-Slippery Bogle will be replaced by Scuttling Sentinel. The Cube does not have many Auras, I don't want people to get the wrong impression. SS will be fair enough.
-Sylvan Bounty will be replaced by Topiary Panther. TP will be so much better than gaining life.
-Defenestrate will be replaced by Murder. It's nice to have Murder with Ravnica art.
-Manic Vandal will be replaced by Gearbane Orangutan. The Orangutan is a strictly better MV, so it makes sense to replace them directly. There's not too many artifacts in the Cube, so the effect will feel fair enough, I think.
-Defiant Ogre will be replaced by Rubblebelt Braggart. One of the few cards that will have Suspect. It's fair because you can give it Menace if you're winning, but keep it as unsuspected if you're needing a blocker.
-Destroy Evil will be replaced by Make Your Move. It's strictly better. (I was hoping something would replace Mark of Valor)
-Fatal Fumes will be replaced by Snarling Gorehound. FF is too expensive for a -2 effect. Meanwhile, the Gorehound adds another surveil card. It's hard to tell if the Gorehound will be too good, since it was made to take advantage of Disguise creatures, which are not in the Cube.
-Forced Adaptation will be replaced by Rubblebelt Maverick. FA is way too slow of an effect, meanwhile RM will always be good, early or late.
-Will-Forged Golem will be replaced by Sanitation Automaton. More Surveil, but I worry that maybe I'm skewing the Cube too low in the size of creatures. We will see.
There are still other cards I'm considering, but these are the ones that for certain will be replaced.
-knightly valor will be replaced by Novice Inspector. I'm just cutting certain Auras because I'm removing Slippery Bogle. I regret that I'm losing a Populate target, but technically NI will leave behind a Clue Token.
-surge of zeal will be replaced by Demand Answers. As much as I love Radiance, I don't think players will often be able to take advantage of giving a bunch of creatures Haste. DA is draw power, and you can sac an artifact late game.
-ocular Halo Will be replaced by Cold Case Cracker. I just like CCC and I want to make room for it. It's another Blue Flyer.
I've reconsidered it, and I'm going to remove Azor in favor of Isperia.
She may not be as exciting as Azor, but she keeps getting reprinted for a reason. If she's the only thing on the field, when your opponent tries to attack you, she'll let you draw some cards and hopefully draw something useful.
Plus, when you're winning she's still a 6/4 flyer.
I do want to be able to reflect the story of Ravnica, so I had always considered adding Bolas's Citadel to represent the War of the Spark.
Nizahon says it's not a bomb and rated it at B-, so I think that's enough to keep it from being completely unfair.
The philosophy of the Cube is that I want my friends to play with the commons. The Rares / Mythics are those (Kinda like) big bombs, while the uncommons are like Silver Bullets. I don't want the uncommons to be too good, or else the decks are going to be made purely out of uncommons. (This Cube was made for Limited)
Boros Elite will move down to Common, to be replaced by "To Arms!" BE is a Battalion card, and since that is one of the themes of the Cube, I want players to have easy access to Boros Elite.
I removed Cancel and replaced it with Sinister Sabotage, more support for a Surveil strategy. (Even though the Dimir's theme is Mill).
More changes will happen after Murder at Karlov Manor is released.
They're probably doing a set of Basic Land Cycling cards, so I'm going to evaluate which ones are going to be replaced.
Definitely want to replace the White and Green ones, but we'll see about the other colors.
We'll see how Sunblade Angel works out. It might be too good as a common.
"Seal of removal" is going to be there until I can replace it with Rapid Hybridization. I thought I had one.
Elusive Krasis was too good in our last game when coupled with Mentor creatures that keep boosting it on top of being Unblockable.
