Swapping Preacher of the Schism for Stinging Cave Crawler may be one of the most interesting points of card comparison I have seen in a while, and I think is valuable to analyze.
Both are from the same set (LCI), and both are 2B for a toughness heavy deathtouch creature. Both have an attack trigger than can draw a card and lose a life.
Why chose Stinging Cave Crawler over Preacher of the Schism?
The stats are not the reason I'm swapping. A 2/4 vs a 1/3 is substantial, considering their mana cost is the same. The attack trigger is the reason these are swapped.
In what deck is Preacher of the Schism good in?
Yes.
You can pick Preacher in every black deck with a good chance of getting value out of it. It stabilizes games insanely well, giving lifelink value when behind and card advantage to close games out.
In what deck is Stinging Cave Crawler good in?
Mostly graveyard centric ones. In this cube, that would most likely be the Sun Titan and Graveyard selection archetypes. However, Auras may pick it up as a deathtouch blocker, and if enough time passes then they could fuel up again if need be.
Stinging Cave Crawler is the worse card.
Preacher of the Schism is the card with more text, and more situations that can play out differently.
But when considering that the cube is both a draft and gameplay experience, the Descend clause on the attack trigger of Stinging Cave Crawler make it a more interesting puzzle piece to fit into a deck construction.
