Key design goals:
  • Aggro, midrange, control and combo are viable in many different forms
  • Balance across colours and macro archetypes
  • No board stalls
  • Every deck naturally has good and bad matchups, but the difference in winrate should not be enormous. You should be able to win a game in a bad matchup, and maybe even win the match.
  • Minimizing non-games
  • Micro archetype support with blurry delineation to incentivize creativity in drafting and novel gameplay moments (high replayability)
  • Micro archetypes reward the player for things that are already good
  • No cards that never make the mainboard
  • During the draft, the drafter is constantly faced with meaningful decisions: Minimizing "draft on rails", even in the more linear strategies
  • Power level Strix 7F
Notably absent:
  • Large amounts of artifact synergies
  • Storm
  • Power 9, and a handful of other power outliers like Sol Ring and Demonic Tutor
  • Initiative and venturing into the dungeon
Macro archetype support is most common in:
  • Aggro - rw
  • Midrange - g
  • Control - u
  • Combo - urwb (and g)
Micro archetype support:
  • Spellslinger ur
  • Reanimator b (and ug)
  • Sacrifice (aristocrats) br
  • Ramp g
  • Stompy gr
  • Death and taxes wb
  • Xerox delve ub
  • Land looping (e.g. Strip Mine) gr (light)
  • Cawblade uw (light)
  • Blink uw (very light)

House rule

Views on fairness

Combo and cheating into play should be viable and strong, but the cube should have powerful answers as well.
