The main purpose of my cube is to create an environment in which I can draft all the "cool ideas" from decks I always wanted to build but never could (or from past decks which I enjoyed), giving me a place to build and express those creative ideas, as well as a space in which I can continue to explore new ideas and discover new strategies and combinations. Because I also need others to want to play with me, I built in support for archetypes/strategies for each color pair so that other players can easily find strategies to play. Currently, I think that there is too much fragmentation between guild strategies and not enough general synergies. I am trying to fix this.
This is the (approximate) structure I'm aiming for:
- 28 gold cards (2-3 from each color pair, acting as signposts for prominent archetypes, plus one 5-color card)
- 21 fixing lands
- 5 utility lands
- ~51 for each of the 5 colors + colorless
The guild archetypes I explicitly support are:
- WU (Azorius): Blink
- WB (Orzhov): Life as a resource (i.e. cards with life costs, offset by life gain)
- WR (Boros): Equipment matters agro
- WG (Selesnya): Enchantments
- UB (Dimir): Theft
- UR (Izzet): Spellslinger
- UG (Simic): +1/+1 Counters
- BR (Rakdos): Sacrifice for attrition
- BG (Golgari): Sacrifice for growth (i.e. a "cycle of life and death" theme)
- RG (Gruul): Land Creatures
In addition to those listed above, I have intentionally included the following themes with varying degrees of support (not all have signpost cards):
- Mill (U)
- Go-big (RG/Gruul)
- Wildfire (RG/Gruul, piggy backs off of Go-big)
- Artifacts Matter (centered in WU/Azorius)
- Creature Tokens (WG/Selesnya)
- A "suicide" combo using Lich's Tomb and Soul Conduit (likely to be played in WB/Orzhov)
- Tribal Ninjas (UB/Dimir)
- Tribal Elves (BG/Golgari)
Things I'm interested in experimenting with in future iterations (not necessarily all at once):
- Customize the dual-colored fixing lands to correspond to effects desired by each guild (e.g. a manland for RG/Gruul, a life land for WB/Orzhov, etc.)
- Snow (centered in UG/Simic)
- A "build your own creature" deck based around Death-Mask Duplicant, The Mimeoplasm, and certain Ikoria mechanics
- Support threshold in WU/Azorius and/or in BG/Golgari
- Creatures with Defender matter (especially walls, but not only walls--all colors)
- Support for Eldrazi mana (think Reality Smasher and the likes)
- Alternative win conditions
- Combos (I've always been bad at these)
- A card cycling package (WR/Boros, using Savai Thundermane)
- A krakens/leviathans package in U
