Taamas' Cube

Introduction

Focused on seeding synergies and multiple overlapping archetypes aiming to provide an exploratory experience to draft.

Origins

This list started around 2013 as a bunch of more funny than coherent cards for trying different formats, such as 2-player drafts and Wizard's Tower, and evolved over the years into a more coherent list.

Formats

Main format: 8-player draft

The list is designed for a traditional 8-player draft as a 375-card list: the 360 needed for 3 packs of 15 cards for each of 8 players and an additional 15 card pack for Lore Seeker.

2-4 players

As it is difficult to set 8-player drafts some ways of using the cube for less players have been explored. The main one is selecting subsections or "MiniCubes" of 90 cards, forming curated card pools centered around one theme. This allows to set up various formats without losing the focus created by not seeing more than half of the cube, either directly using one of the 90 cards pools or combining two to create a more varied 180 cards pool.

The focus of the themes can make for repeating or redundant decks, which should be compensated by not always playing the same list. The lists have also been designed with this in mind and variety has been added without diverging too much from the theme when possible.

Also some cards might appear in multiple lists. If combining lists sharing cards either choose some more cards to reach 180 or play with less total cards. Lists should be focused enough to allow for smaller pools.

These are the current MiniCubes. The cards in each of them have been marked with a tag on CubeCobra.

  • Enchantments (gw(u)): [MC]Enchantments. Enchantments with go-wide in white and ramp in green. Splashed blue for some enchantments and gold cards.
  • Artifacts (ur(b)): [MC]Artifacts. Artifacts in blue and red with splashed black for tutors and removal.
  • Combo (u(br(gw))): [MC]Combo. Combos or strong synergies and support for searching them.
  • Aggro (rwb): [MC]Aggro. Mainly aggressive 1 and 2 costs in white, black and red.
  • Jeskai (urw): [MC]Jeskai. High density of instants and sorceries, spells-matter cards, flicker.
  • Temur (gur): [MC]Temur.
  • Sultai (bgu): [MC]Sultai. Midrange creatures, ramp and land stuff.
  • Jund (brg): [MC]Jund. Midrange, high average mana cost.

These are some 2-player formats than can be played with the MiniCubes:

  • Winston, Winchester, or other 2-player formats with 3 packs of 15 cards per player: Draft one MiniCube.
  • Grid Draft: Combine two MiniCubes. Since grid draft is traditionally played with 162 cards (18 packs of 9 cards) there should be no problem if some but not too many cards overlap between the lists and the combination results in less than 180 cards.
  • 2-player Sealed: To give the traditional 90-card pool to a player, either combine two MiniCubes and split them randomly, or give one MiniCube to a player. This has not been tested, but given that MiniCubes are already very focused it can be hard to create a list from these big pools, specially when not shuffling together the lists. It could be enough and more interesting to just randomly split one MiniCube between the two players and having them work out a deck from the resulting pools of 45 cards.

To play with more players combine two MiniCubes and adjust the format to the pool of cards (e.g. draft the 180 pool for draft formats, leave some out if playing with three players, etc.)

Introducing players

A 20-card list in each color has been designed inspired by JumpStart, either to combine two to make a 40-card deck or to directly play the 20-card list for very new players. This eliminates the need of deckbuilding, which is a skill that should come after a basic understanding of the game.

Each list contains 12 cards: just add 8 basic lands for the 20-card deck.
