Writing this down as a reminder to myself:

This is an Archenemy cube (mk II because the first one sucked). The premise is Archenemy, but in a cube, because Commander players need more variety in their lives. Also 3v1 means no one gets to complain about being ganged up on, so maybe less salt-inducing?

Design goals:

  • No combo (last time I said some stuff about "high power" and I think that's bullshit, the heroes should be fighting for their lives together, not buying time for a combo, and the archenemy should have to actually kill these nerds the hard way)
  • The heroes feel like an actual team from start to finish
  • The Archenemy gets to fuck with the heroes from start to finish (really live up the villainous fantasy)
  • Drafting is interesting and competitive; no cards feel like they're too Archenemy/Hero focused (some skew is inevitable, but should be minimized)
  • Hero turns should feel somewhat snappy. (gold sharpie rules below may make this tough, thinking about a timer for the heroes or some other way to encourage speed?)
  • Draft is high agency for archenemy and heroes

Rules modifications

  • I'm gonna get a gold sharpie and underline some instances of "you" and "your". Underlined "you control" means "your team controls", eg Guttersnipe will read "Whenever your team casts an instant or sorcery, deal 2 damage to each opponent"
  • Maybe also underlining "sacrifice" or "pay x" to give costs assist or allow you to (with your teammates permission) sacrifice one of their permanents
  • Also thinking about cost changing some cards, maybe some archenemy favored cards cost less for the heroes, and vice versa? Also just making like, Intimidation Campagin cost 2 instead or something lol
  • If the Archenemy runs out of cards, maybe they get to just set into motion Embrace my Diabolical Vision instead of the top card of their scheme deck?
  • 40 card draft decks (I'm worried about deck size lol)

Draft format

  • Lay out 17 cards on the table
  • Archenemy selects 2
  • Heroes select 3 (1 per person)
  • Repeat (Archenemy gets last 2)
  • Schemes are drafted somewhere in here
  • We repeat for 20 "packs"

I dunno we figure this out later lol
(Basically need to tread the line between high-agency and also not taking 2 hours to draft lol)
Heroes probably share a card pool though and figure out decks later? Unclear.
