Cube Drafting Rules & Formats Drafting Formats Based on Player Count
  • 4 players β†’ Silent Auction Draft (see below)
  • 6 players β†’ Standard draft (4 packs of 12 cards)
  • 8 players β†’ Standard draft (3 packs of 15 cards)

Card Selection & Exclusions

Some mechanics are excluded for gameplay reasons (e.g. Day/Night, Max Speed). The cube is kept mostly fantasy-themed, meaning very few Universes Beyond cards. For now, only Lord of the Rings and Dungeons & Dragons cards are included as exceptions.

Normal Draft Rules

This cube is designed to play similarly to a powered cube but without completely automatic picks. The Power 10 (Black Lotus, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, and the five Moxen) are not included in normal drafts. The goal is to encourage interesting choices rather than forcing players to take cards.

Seeded Pack Structure

Each pack contains:

  • One card of each color
  • One colorless card
  • One multicolor card
  • One mana-fixing land
  • The remaining slots are random

Silent Auction Draft (4 Players)

We draft this way for the following reasons:

  • Silent Auction is the best way to draft with four people.
  • Gathering four people is much easier than six or more.
  • We love playing with power, but every choice should feel meaningful. The silent auction format ensures that if you want a piece of power, you have to pay for it.
Power 10 Inclusion

As this cube is normally unpowered, i use the following process to add power to this draft. I take 10 cards reserved for the random slots, mix them with the Power 10 and shuffle these 20 cards. Then I return 10 of the 20 cards to the box, and add the other 10 back to the pile that will be added to the boosters. This method results in a normal distribution where 82% of drafts contain 4, 5, or 6 pieces of power.

Silent Auction Draft Rules Setup
  • Make 12 boosters of 15 cards.
  • Players start with 200 points. You can use a piece of paper but we use an app on a tablet.
  • Hand each player a sheet of paper to write their bids on. A Google doc is provided below.
Bidding Phase
  • A pack is shuffled and the cards are laid out in a 3Γ—5 grid.
  • Players secretly bid points on all 15 cards.
  • The total of points bid in a round cannot exceed the player's remaining points.
  • A bid of 0 points is allowed, and happens often.
  • Players do not regain points at any point during the draft.
  • Players may not discuss bids, though casual banter is fine.
Auction Resolution
  • All bids are revealed.
  • The auction is resolved one card at a time (top-left to bottom-right).
  • Players only pay for cards they win.
Tiebreakers

If two or more players bid the same amount for a card, the winner is determined as follows:

  1. The player with the most points remaining.
  2. The player with the fewest drafted cards so far.
  3. A die roll.
Draft Progression
  • The next pack is opened, and the process repeats until all 12 packs are drafted.
Starting the Game
  • The player with the most points remaining after drafting goes first in Game 1.
  • If tied, a die is rolled.
