FLOTSAM HELD TOGETHER BY OPTIMISM.

This is a "Peasant Plus" cube composed entirely of cards belonging to former and current Magic Arena draft sets: if you could have drafted a set through Arena, you'll find it represented here (you won't see Historic Anthology or Jumpstart cards). Rare lands have been included to increase the pace of play, as well as enable three-, four-, and even five-color decks without significant
mana constraints within the first few turns.

While every two-color combination can build towards a specific archetype, this cube is designed to encourage three-color decks and beyond. While not every wedge and shard is equally balanced, it is possible to draft a synergistic, powerful deck within all of them.

MISSION STATEMENT

This cube seeks to replicate the macro-archetypes I have most enjoyed from my set-Limited experience, ranging from combo to aggro to draw-go control. The intention is to offer players the opportunity to hone in on a style of deck they enjoy, and create something as close to optimized as a Limited game mode can offer. It is possible to build an aggro deck with 25 creatures and a top-end of 3 CMC, or a midrange deck with a 90% chance of casting a mana dork on turn 2, followed by a 4 CMC 4/4 on turn 3.

The (largely-)Peasant cube you'll find here appeals to my taste when it comes to set Limited: I tend to dislike bomb-heavy, Rare-dominated, "prince" formats. Crafting and piloting a finely-tuned machine, only to get blown out by a God-Eternal or Elder Dragon you can't possibly answer, feels bad. As such, the Peasant format keeps power level roughly equivalent across all cards. There is a significant difference in power between Venerable Knight and The Eldest Reborn, but it is not so great as that between Venerable Knight and Polukranos, Unchained.

One of my primary goals in curating this list is to maintain a balance between threats and answers. In considering the strength of removal, I've also considered the strength, cost, and impact of what it will be removing. Cast Down and Heartless Act are two of the strongest pieces of removal the Historic format can offer but, in my opinion, a 2 CMC card should not be able to answer a 4, 5, or 6 CMC card. The ramp player who spends six turns hard casting Titanoth Rex, and who then sees it answered by a 2 CMC instant, feels bad. Good removal needs to exist but, just as Peasant threats are not so difficult to handle, should not be so good at handling threats.

IN CLOSING

Please: go forth, draft, and enjoy the experience I'm actively working to make enjoyable! If you have any feedback or criticism, please feel free to message me on Reddit at u/lupinefiasco. Good luck and have fun!
