The 360 New Border Pauper Cube is a fun drafting experience with powerful and synergistic commons. I also have my discord for all things related to the cube here, where I post potential cards to add, spoilers, things I'm thinking of cutting, etc: https://discord.gg/dUFzXp4J
Cube Criteria:
1.) Must be a physically printed common (so no Beetleback Chief).
2.) Must have the border from M15 and forward. This excludes Universes Beyond cards, since the holo-stamp on the bottom breaks continuity.
3.) Must be from a draft set/from a booster pack. hence why I do not have cards like Mulldrifter or Rancor.
Cube Philosophy
This cube is based off of 2 design principles that WOTC themselves have made as well as 2 of my own design principles.
1.) Post-new-world-order commons: starting with the original zendikar set, commons were designed to be more simplistic and narrow in their design to introduce new players to the game in an easier fashion. Since commons were the first opened card rarity in a pack, it would make sense for this. Kor Skyfisher is an example of this - a narrow design, yet simple and synergistic.
2.) New border: I settled on the new border for two reasons. Reason 1: I prefer the m15 border for aesthetic reasons, as it gives card art more room to breathe. Reason 2: Narrowing my cube selection to this makes me exclude high-powered cards like Pestilence or Capsize. As the saying goes in all sorts of creative mediums, "limitation breeds creativity".
3.) Draft archetypes are relatively loose. As seen in some cube archetype videos or written in cube related articles, this is known as "cross-pollinators". Cards in mono-colors are kept as "cross-pollinaty" as possible. There are exceptions, of course: Boros Elite is great in a boros aggro deck, but might be difficult in the orzhov aristocrats archetype alongside Mold Folk. This is not to say, however, that orzhov aggro could be built.
4.) I recently decided to remove commons that only existed in pre-constructed commander decks with the new border. My reasoning for this is continuity. By keeping only cards that have appeared in some form of draft environment, it limits my selection options for high powered cards. This recently removed the all-star Mulldrifter, which made me think about strong cards that could replace such an effective flicker target.
Cube ArchetypesAlly Colors
: Azorius synergizes with flying creatures, flickering "enters" triggers for value, and controlling the board with removal, counterspells, and effective blockers. Lyev Skyknight showcases both flying and flickering cards, as does Holy Cow. Azorius cross-polinates with dimir with counterspells like the infamous Counterspell, as well as boros with Novice Inspector and Thraben Inspector.
: Dimir utilizes classic control to stall the board and finish with powerful creatures. Counterspells and removal with late-game value like Lose Focus and Wither and Bloom make way for big creatures in the form of Gurmag Angler or Striped Riverwinder. Dimir also cross-pollinates with azorius with flying creatures like Faerie Seer or Frost Trickster, which can use ninjutsu cards like Dokuchi Shadow-Walker.
: Rakdos is full-on aristocrats with a splash of aggro support. Mold Folk and Bogardan Dragonheart provide effective ways to dump creatures in the bin for value, while Retrofitted Transmogrant and Ratcatcher Trainee provide repeatable ways to produce creatures to sacrifce (aka "fodder"). Aether Chaser provides aggro support by cross-pollinating with boros, as well as cross-pollinating with dimir in the form of Vampire Interloper, Morkrut Behemoth, and Diregraf Horde.
: Gruul supports two archetypes: either aggro or ramp. Goblin Anarchomancer makes way for beaters like Annoyed Altisaur or Boarding Party, and Burning-Tree Emissary can make for Jade Avenger, the aforementioned Aether Chaser, Mayhem Patrol, or Wary Thespian easier to cast. Gruul cross-pollinates especially well, Wary Thespian being especially good in golgari, and Voracious Varmint being good anywhere with green.
: Selesnya uses modified creatures with repeatable auras or equipment. Almost every aura in the cube provides multiple means of value: Valor of the Worthy provides a flying creature on death, while Elephant Guide leaves behind a 3/3. Greatsword of Tyr is an excellent beatstick of a card, and Colossal Dreadmask can win games without having to be equipped. Selesnya cross-polinates by having its powerful modifications attached to other colors, such as Spider Umbra in simic, or Hyena Umbra in azorius. Many aggressive creatures also work nicely here, such as Mother Bear or Miner's Guidewing.
Enemy Colors
: Orzhov uses aristocrats like rakdos, and also what I call "persistent combat", meaning that dies-triggers on cards provide repeated value to keep attacking. Doomed Traveler leaves behind a flying beater, and Cadaver Imp can get back a sacrificed creature and hit in the air. Vermin Gorger and Mold Folk can sacrifice creatures that can be brought back stronger with Recommission, and combat can be trickier with cards like Blessed Defiance or Not Dead After All. Orzhov most obviously cross-pollinates with rakdos with many aristocrats cards, but also with aggressive creatures that die well like Mandibular Kite in boros or Cathar Commando in anything running white.
: Boros uses aggressive creatures that are above-rate, meaning that they provide more value than mana invested into them. Reckless Lackey being one such powerful card, as well as Rimrock Knight and Parish-Blade Trainee. Boros also has access to powerful removal like Lightning Bolt and Cooped Up, and can finish the game with Rally the Peasants and Rhox Veteran, a powerful tap-downer that also buffs the rest of your attackers. Boros cross-pollinates with izzet via impulse draw effects like Wrenn's Resolve, and azorius by using draw effects from the aforementioned Novice Inspector, and the powerful Inspiring Overseer.
: Izzet uses a "draw-go" means of spellslinging. This creates a well-timed cast for instant and sorcery casts, rather than "spamming" cards in one turn. Examples include Thermo-Alchemist which consistently provides damage value, and Cruel Witness to filter away unwanted cards (or just to see what's on top). I do not include cards like Nivix Cyclops, or Kiln Fiend, since "spam" cards don't cross-pollinate well, and lots of card draw is needed to support that. Cross-pollinators that are especially effective are Sword Coast Serpent for dimir, or even Demand Answers for rakdos: as the sacrifice an artifact can target creatures like Retrofitted Transmogrant or Goldhound.
: Simic is ramp with annoying creatures. Llanowar Elves and kin can push out a turn two Eldrazi Skyspawner or Jewel Thief, and Needlethorn Drake and Nightshade Dryad provide effective ways to block, and in the dryad's case, also provide for more mana to play value creatures like Striped Riverwinder Owlbear, or Petrifying Meddler. Arcane Denial, Counterspell and Curse of the Werefox provide effective means of removal, and simic also cross-polinates well with golgari in the form of Bannerhide Krushok and Hooting Mandrills.
: Golgari supports ramp, and a similar archetype with orzhov with persistent combat. Bannerhide Krushok can be used in variety of ways, and can be brought back with the immensely powerful Unseal the Necropolis, which is devastating against decks that don't run enough recursion or don't have a lot of graveyard value. Moldering Karok and Dreg Mangler hit hard, with the haste on Mangler providing immediate value. Tapping at the Window can draw a creature and might bin some others, which can be brought back with a huge Death Denied for a win later. Golgari cross-polinates exceptionally well with ozorius and rakdos with persistent combat cards like Carrier Thrall or Guildsworn Prowler, and reanimation spells are good in anything running black, like Unearth or Dread Return. Anything that can be ramped to in simic (that's green, at least) can also be ramped to in golgari, like Elfhame Wurm and/or Tajuru Pathwarden, with Vampire Sovereign also cross-pollinating well with dimir.
