credit to alex and joe for a lot of the original work on this cube
rules:-no basic lands
-35 card minimum deck size
-doesn't support more than 6 players
in the wasteland, we must spill blood for the barest traces of mana. tapping lands to cast spells is a luxury we have nearly forgotten. together we sit in the dust in the shade of a dead tree and make do with the shrapnel we have scavenged, the many-headed gods mere fuel for the sputtering furnace.
in the manaless cube, players do not get basic lands to build their decks. sources of mana are scarce, and all are either temporary (Elvish Spirit Guide, Lotus Petal), severely restricted (Pillar of the Paruns, Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper), take some time to set up (Mox Tantalite, Lotus Field), or come with harsh drawbacks (Hall of the Bandit Lord, City of Shadows).
spending mana is a supplement to the manaless strategies that are the main focus of the cube. the cube centers around 0-mana cards (Memnite, Kobolds of Kher Keep), alternative casting costs and costs that can be paid without mana (Force of Will, Basking Rootwalla, Gut Shot, Martyr's Soul), costs that can be reduced to 0 (Frogmite, Hollow One), opening hand effects (Leyline of Hope, Chancellor of the Forge), free graveyard effects and self-reanimators (Vengevine, Slitherhead, Golgari Brownscale), and various other oddball free effects (Faerie Macabre, Sky Hussar).
as most mana sources are wubrg or colourless (and you aren't spending mana all that much anyway) colours are less of a concern in this cube. however, they aren't irrelevant; most of the strongest and most reliable interaction in the cube is pitch spells like Force of Will, Force of Vigor, and Pyrokinesis, which incentivise you to play many cards of the same colour.
the manaless cube contains conspiracies, un-set cards, mystery booster playtest cards, and "unknown event" playtest cards.
archetypesthe broad core archetypes (which all can overlap heavily) are:
affinity: play piles of 0-mana artifacts to enable payoffs like Salvage Titan, Frogmite, and Foundry Assembler.
dredge/graveyard: by far the broadest and most well-supported archetype. after filling the graveyard with cards like Bazaar of Baghdad, Phantasmagorian, and Golgari Grave-Troll, options for payoffs are extensive. swarm the battlefield with guys like Narcomoeba, Prized Amalgam, and Ichorid, and then use them to cast black convoke cards, Dread Return, or Demon of Death's Gate, or jump through some more hoops (or get lucky) to get back bigger guys like Vengevine, Arden Angel, and Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis. miscellaneous other options include Spinning Darkness, Vengeful Pharaoh, and Bridge from Below.
convoke: comes in a few flavours. white convoke has powerful payoffs in Martyr's Soul and Venerated Loxodon, but relies heavily on Hold the Perimeter to get started. green convoke uses Vine Dryad, Allosaurus Rider, and Basking Rootwalla to help cast Sprout Swarm and Sprouting Renewal.
lands: slow but consistent, lands decks are the most mana-focused archetype. spend the early game plopping down random lands in order to build towards reliable mana sources like Temple of the False God and Scorched Ruins. Allosaurus Rider and Bloodghast fit well in these decks.
minor archetypes and synergies include:
spellslinger: play free instants to get Demilich and Arclight Phoenix into play.
Serra's Sanctum + leylines: benefits from various effects that help to fix your opening hand to maximise free leylines + find serra's sanctum asap, like Serum Powder, Backup Plan, Devourer of Destiny. often overlaps with white convoke.
Blazing Shoal OTK: combine Blazing Shoal with very high mana value red cards like Progenitus and Who // What // When // Where // Why to deal huge damage out of nowhere. with a 10+ mv pitch and a spell doubling effect like Double Stroke, Flare of Duplication, or Leyline of Resonance this combo can kill in one hit!
Weight Advantage: this conspiracy turns the kobolds, Phyrexian Walker, and Ornithopter into real offensive threats, forming one of the most effective aggro strategies in the cube. Scars of the Veteran and Leyline of Vitality are strong support.
The Capitoline Triad: casting the triad is very doable with dredge support and enough artifacts and legends, plus perhaps the help of Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper. with hefty historic cards like Reaper King, The Ur-Dragon, and Myr Enforcer floating around, making the game-winning emblem is totally feasible.
