Design Notes
The Mattstone Cube is a synergy cube, meaning that on average, cards are less powerful, but become stronger when you draft cards that compliment them. These synergies span across colors and card types. There are some lightly supported synergies such as zombies with Headless Rider and blink with Displacer Kitten. These synergies appear more so in packages than in entire archetypes, but I've decided to describe two-color pairs to guide newer players to the non-traditional cube environment.
Power Matters - Don't you know that bigger is better, a little bit is never enough...no no no. Buff your creatures with effects such as Halana and Alena, Partners to trigger synergistic effects like Gwenna, Eyes of Gaea and give your team double strike with Embercleave to swing in for the win!
Fetchlands - There are plenty of fetchlands in this cube, so why not use them to your benefit? Recur your lost lands with effects like Crucible of Worlds and Second Sunrise to ramp into powerful creatures such as Titania, Protector of Argoth.
Fling Sacrifice - Aren't you tired of pinging people with Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat in your Rakdos cube decks? Instead, why not use Fling on your Rotting Regisaur. This deck is far more explosive than your traditional aristocrats deck. You can even live the dream by flinging a Yargle and Multani at your opponent.
Wizards Control - Shadow Wizard Money Gang! We love casting spells! The Dimir archetype in this cube is properly controlling with cards like Venser, Shaper Savant and Ertai Resurrected to keep your opponents second guessing those two untapped islands you control. The archetype is rounded out by Naban, Dean of Iteration to teach your opponents a lesson.
Cheerios Storm - It's raining Lotus Petals! Reduce the cost of your artifacts with effects like Cloud Key and then cast them for cheap to power up a Paradoxical Outcome or Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle. Finish them off with an Aetherflux Reservoir or Digsite Engineer to show you mean business.
Equipment - You've seen it in every draft set since 2016, but you've never seen it like this. Equipment here are also threats such as Dancing Sword, Rabbit Battery, and Dragonwing Glider. Attach them to a Fireblade Charger or Venerable Warsinger and you're in for a good time.
Artifacts - You've seen Saheeli, Sublime Artificer trigger off counterspells and burn, but what if it triggered off Reinforced Ronin or Steel Overseer instead? Whether you're drawing cards with Sai, Master Thopterist or pinging opponents with Reckless Fireweaver, this deck wants to churn out an assembly line of efficient artifacts.
Tokens - Marry the thopters Whirler Rogue of blue with the food Tough Cookie of green to establish a board that goes wide. Tap your tokens with Jaheira, Friend of the Forest or pump them up with End-Raze Forerunners to close out a game.
Sun Titans - Instead of reanimating big creatures, orzhov in this cube focuses on recurring small threats over and over. Cards like Faith's Reward, Second Sunrise, and Brought Back keep the recursive value train coming. After reanimating a few Nested Shamblers and Skyclave Apparitions you'll sure drown out your opponent in value.
Keyword Soup - Here's a recipe for disaster! Amass a board full of evergreen allies like Nighthawk Scavenger and Wilson, Refined Grizzly and then spread your keywords around with cards such as Soulflayer, Majestic Myriarch, and Urborg Scavengers.
