Step inside to the Commander Funhouse!

  • Draft 60 card minimum decks (including commanders; excluding companions and conspiracies) that adhere to commander identity rules. The format is four-player free-for-all commander.
  • Any commander with a color identity of one or less colors can be used as a Partner commander, meaning if you have another commander with Partner or a color identity of one or less colors, you can have two commanders.
  • Packs are 20 cards with three seeded slots for commanders. You draft two cards per pick and there are three packs per player.
  • Each color has a central theme to help focus drafting and allow players to be able to be more open in their draft:
    • w - Go Wide
    • u - Spells
    • b - Graveyard
    • r - Artifacts
    • g - Ramp
  • Each color combination has a variety of themes that can interact with the larger monocolor themes:
    • wu - Blink/Artifacts
    • ub - Self-Mill/Saboteur
    • br - Sacrifice/Treasure
    • rg - Treasure/Lands
    • gw - Tokens/Lifegain
    • wb - Aristocrats/Revolt
    • ur - Spells/Artifacts
    • bg - Graveyard/Lands
    • rw - Equipment/Heroic
    • gu - Big Mana/Lands
  • The large macro-theme is tokens, where every color and every color combination can care about tokens in some regard.
  • I recommend looking at the actual list of commanders to get a feel for what archetypes are actually supported. For example, every color has a minor Heroic theme and there are a few commanders that have their own take on that theme.
  • All ten companions are available as both commanders and companions. All of them have supported decks you can draft to companion them, but for a few of them, it will be difficult and a once-in-awhile thing. The companions must match the color identity of your commanders if you companion them. Lutri, the Spellchaser is on a watchlist.
  • A variety of silver-bordered, acorn, playtest cards, and conspiracies are also available in the draft pool and are usually fun, unique, and powerful effects. The cycle of Acorn-stamped partners are among the partners in the cube.
  • Nearby Planet, for the purposes of the draft, is made to be legal in any commander deck despite being all basic land types. Otherwise the card would only be allowed in five-color decks.
  • I've done a lot of work to get Far Out supported in the Cube. Look out for modal cards to draft with it! Still have no idea if it's gonna be good or not. Note that if you control Far Out and cast Phone a Friend you can ask your phoned friend to choose four modes.
  • Mark Rosewater says the instant or sorcery chosen using Standard Procedure must adhere to commander color identity rules. I disagree. Choose any Standard-legal instant or sorcery with mana value 3 or less you want. Just make sure you have the mana to cast it!
