The Fundies Cube is a 360-card new-player friendly cube designed to strengthen cube fundamentals. It's about a Strix 4-N, or in other words, it's power level between a set cube and the MTGO Modern cube. While its cards are not individually complex, they still have considerable depth; Lightning Bolt isn't wordy, but that doesn't stop it from being a powerful card that creates interesting decisions and memorable plays!
RestrictionNon-evergreen mechanics are not permitted with the exception of cycling, flashback, and kicker. These mechanics all reduce non-games and smooth out draws. Kicker and Cycling both make cards relevant at more stages in the game, and cycling and flashback favorably interact with the graveyard. All three of these mechanics have a good argument for being evergreen and maximize the depth-to-complexity ratio this cube strives for.
Despite the new MDFCs similar positive effect on games, they are for now still excluded. Despite already many being hailed as cube all-stars, they are much less intuitive to new players than the other included mechanics, and there still are relatively few of them. For example, you can't search your deck for their back half, yet you can play the back half from your graveyard with an effect such as Crucible of Worlds. Players must also memorize the back half, or must have a split-card showing the back half sintead. As we see more MDFCs and how their design space expands, they may eventually warrant an inclusion.
ArchetypesThe cube should also highlight the core mechanics of Magic. This means interesting and relevant combat decisions and synergy based on card types and game zones. The cube's supported archetypes stem from this goal, and are not pigeon-holed into specific color combinations. They include, but are not limited, to:
Finally, this cube is still a work in progress, and my next goal is to shrink the variance in card power. Consistency in power will make the environment less hostile for new drafters.
