Introduction
Inspired by the flourishing cube communities of Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin, the MKE Bar Cube was created to provide our local limited enthusiasts with an authentic Bar Cube experience! With my favorite local game store being attached to a fantastic brewpub, and a growing local fascination in all things limited , it was only a matter of time until the MKE Bar Cube was born.
With no sleeves, counters, or tokens required, this cube aims to provide players with a casual gaming experience, yet high level of gameplay with powerful cards and synergies. This list is filled to the brim with fan favorite limited staples and plenty of fixing, that means near limitless combinations and unique interactions. Drafted in 5 packs of 9, you and your pals will end up with consistent decks with smooth mana bases.
Archetypes
The archetypes of this cube are based around some synergies that naturally arise when some of the community's favorite cards are tossed into pile together. With the format being designed for four players, I thought it only right to design for four overarching playstyles that can take many unique forms.
These four umbrella terms include Flicker, Reanimator, Burn/Aggro, and Ramp/5 Color based in Green. On average, I anticipate drafted deck lists to resemble Bant Flicker, Sultai Reanimator, Jeskai Burn/Aggro, or 4/5 Color Good Stuff. Due to the mana fixing provided however, there is a considerable amount of wiggle room to travel off of the beaten path.
For example a Bant Flicker Deck could splash red or for cards like Flametongue Kavu, or a Dimir Reanimator Deck could splash green for access to more big creatures like Colossal Skyturtle or Pelakka Wurm. If expanded to a 360 card list, there would be even more design space for a multitude of new, overlapping synergies and color combinations, but for now I prefer the focused yet less varied list while I continue to playtest and receive feedback.
ERRATA
Titanoth Rex changed to exclude any mention on trample counters.
Flametongue Yearling changed to exclude any mention of multikicker and +1/+1 counters.
Soulherder changed first ability to "whenever a creature is exiled from the battlefield, Scry 1."
Kellan, Daring Traveler changed to exclude entire adventure portion of the card.
Thraben Inspector changed to read "When Thraben Inspector leaves the battlefield, draw a card."
Persist changed to read "Return target nonlegendary creature from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped."
Final Thoughts
This is my first official cube that I have built since I was 13 years old and built a near unplayable junk rare cube, and I am excited to playtest it with my friends in the Milwaukee limited community. This list is still a work in progress and has yet to be extensively tested, I will be vigilantly tracking player feedback on fun and power level. Potential tools to balance power levels include graveyard hate, life gain, the increase or decrease of fixing sources, and the increase or decrease of flicker enablers/payoffs.
Any feedback or recommendations are greatly appreciated, Cube on friends! :)
