Overview

Cube Goals:

  • Make poison a viable archetype
  • Explore a synergistic approach to cube, focusing on core archetypes and support synergies
  • Support slower combo decks
  • Explore options for hate-cards/sideboard counter-play to balance archetypes rather than powering them down directly. e.g. Solemnity/Aura Flux

Lands Rule Modification:
Each player begins each game with an emblem which reads: "Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped and under your control, if you played it or if it entered the battlefield as a result of an ability of a land source, you may pay 2 life. If you do, untap it."

Cube Design Stages:

  1. Outline goals & theorise
  2. Begin adding cards based on stage 1
  3. Exploration of emergent themes from stage 2 (Bot test drafting can start from here)
  4. Cut cube back to near play size
  5. Playtest with other players, chisel off large bumps - I AM HERE
  6. Refine based on feedback, continue solo testing and playing with others.

Other Notes About the Environment:

  1. Enchantments play a big role in this environment, and as such I expect enchantment removal to be at a premium. You will want to have ways to deal with your opponent's Skrelv's Hive or Exquisite Blood
  2. Blue currently feels like a support colour, providing card selection, evasion and counter magic to the other colours.
Archetypes
Primary Archetypes

Infect

Comprised of core "Infect" cards such as Glistener Elf, supported by Toxic cards which act as a bridge between infect and other archetypes. Single card enablers also included to boost the strategy such as Triumph of the Hordes & Glistening Oil.
Primary: bg, Secondary: w, Tertiary: u.

Enchantments

Accrue card advantage and overwhelm your opponent with enchantment creatures, enchantment based removal and constellation effects.
Primary: wg, payoffs located in WG with enablers in all colours.

(slow) Reanimator

Low MV "value reanimation" and high MV "fatty reanimation" are both possible here. Pitch some fatties into the yard and get them on the board early for maximum devastation.
Primary: b, Secondary w

Secondary/Support Archetypes

Proliferate

Synergising with infect, -1 counters, +1 counters, planeswalkers and Sagas. Proliferate helps give a support and enhance many of the cube's key themes and strategies.
Primary: g, Tertiary support in: wubr

Modified

With a wealth of counters, auras and equipment running around, keyword "modified" feels well at home here.

Madness

Light support for madness, supported by the cross pollinating from reanimator.
Primary: br, with a few discard enablers in u.

Tribal

  • Tribal: Very light-touch tribal opportunities with cards like Karumonix, the Rat King (<10 enablers), and Grafted Butcher. There are no dedicated "Tribal Decks" here, rather opportunity to weave in additional synergy in otherwise competitive decks.
As not all Phyrexians have updated Oracle text, telltale signs of a phyrexian creature are:
It has infect. e.g. Blight Mamba
It has a phyrexian watermark in the text box. E.g. Massacre Wurm/Deceiver Exarch

Combo

Outside of slow reanimation, there are a few combo packages available:

Noteboard

Stuff I didn't include in Agile, can I make it work here?:

  • Look at inclusion of additional walkers, what can they meaningfully provide for the environment. What archetypes/deck styles are enabled well specifically by them?
  • Protection - Investigate options for protection
  • Dredge (and other self mill) - do we need more ways to fill the graveyard?

Death/Return enchantments for blink style triggers
need to get some evasion enchantments in. give the team menace or alternative

Tagging for parasitism:
p0 - This card's baseline is good in most decks.
p1 - This cards baseline is serviceable in most decks. Improves in the "right" deck.
p2 - This card's baseline is poor in most decks. Improves massively in the right deck.
p3 - This card really shouldn't be played in the wrong deck.

Currently have duplicate tags on some cards because I can't decide if the baseline of divination is good enough to rank tezzeret's gambit or Infectious Inquiry a p0 or p1

Creature baselines:
P/T equal to MV = serviceable. e.g. Viral Spawning gets a rating of p1, as a serviceable 3/3 body for 3 mana, with upside requiring investment into the strategy.

Cards can achieve a lower P rating by:

  • enabling their own synergy. e.g. Glissa's Retriever
  • providing upside over their baseline which doesn't require synergy
  • providing synergistic appeal to many prominent archetypes. e.g. voidwing hybrid provides a baseline body which is serviceable, but the evasion + toxic means it has opportunity to enable a "Corrupted" effect, and the proliferate exists in abundance and doesn't require hybrid to be on the battlefield to benefit.
