Welcome!

Dominaria as a draft format has aged, much like many video game classics - adored on release, but difficult to return to - for the lack of improvements their sequels have enjoyed.

Introduction

This is a remastered version of Dominaria designed to replicate the nostalgic feel of drafting the set but updated to better match modern limited design philosophy. My main desires in creating this cube were:

  • Increase the viability and synergy of underpowered archetypes. Synergy decks can be some of the most fun to draft and play, and while Dominaria succeeded with some (UR wizards and BG saprolings) it failed with others (RW auras/equipment and legendary decks).
  • Reduce the number of near unplayable cards, thereby increasing options in wheel packs. My hope is this increases player's ability to pivot in the draft and makes drafts more interesting.
Methodology

My design philosophy guiding card changes was replace the worst cards in each color with similar but better cards of the same rarity. Ideally, replacements will do a better job supporting their archetypes without unseating the best cards for that color/deck.

Rarity breakdown (with some exceptions):

  • 1 of each Mythic
  • 2 of each Rare
  • 3 of each Uncommon
  • 4 of each Common

The default draft for this cube aims to replicate the feel of retail draft. As such, packs contain 1 Rare/Mythic, 3 Uncommons, and 11 Commons. One Uncommon in each pack will be legendary, and the Rare/Mythic may be as well. Cards that I wish appear with less frequency will have some copies removed

Additionally, I have included common lands not in the base set to replace the basic land slot, as I have a deep and abiding hatred of basic lands being in draft packs. The suite of lands includes the gainlands, 2 cycles of cycling lands, and some utility lands.

What's the Difference?
