Hey, I’m JimHarbor. You may know me on discord as JimHarbor (PerfectRock’s Writer) on the discord custom magic forums. I’m a
limited junkie and commons are my favorite rarity, so I aimed to make an arena playable cube that captured the best type of
gameplay and power level you would find in a retail magic set. Below is the historic cube.
I built my Historic Cube to aim at a sort of “Historic Masters” limited environment. It’s stronger than a standard legal premier
set but it's not gonna be the haymaker central of the official Arena cube or some paper ones. One of the best parts of masters
sets is seeings synergy between set themes years apart. Who doesn't like Soulshifting a Nameless Inversion? With that in mind, the
cube was built around the classic ten limited color pair archetypes with each making use of a theme present across the historic
card pool. The breakdown of power is also meant to be similar to a retail limited set with a “curve” of bombs, contextual cards,
generic removal, curve fillers and odd build around uncommons.
WU HISTORIC
Dominaria is a well-loved set so adding in the Theros Sagas and the bevy of legends that wotc has been printing out was a slam
dunk for the theme. All white and blue sagas except for the horrible Fall of the Thran and busted Kiora Bests the Sea God made it
in. Historic keys off artifacts as well, and most of them are cast triggers like with Serra Disciple and Kraxos, Scourge of Kroog,
so several cheap cantrip style rocks such as Skyscanner and Golden Egg made it in. Blue and White also have the most Legends of
the color pairs here with cards like Shaeeli and Thalia filling up the curve.
UB SELF MILL
Blue and Black have a metric ton of graveyard stuffing themes from across sets so this was a slam dunk theme. Mire Triton, Weight
of Memory, Sweet Oblivion and others fill your grave then you can cast stuff from it with Escape, Jump-Start or Flashback
(Chainer’s Edict, Silent Departure, Mogis’ Favor) or add cards back to your hand with cards like Macabre Waltz, Bond of Insight or
Corpse Churn.
BR SACRIFICE
Sacrifice was a heavily used BR theme so this deck combines token makers (Goblin Instigator, Lazotep Reaver) death triggers (Grim
Initiate, Doomed Dissenter) and threaten effects (Hijack, Threaten) with a ton of cards that sac things for value (Lampad of
Death’s Vigil, Ahn-Crop Invader, Fireblade artist). Be on the lookout for black cards that bring themselves back like Durable
Coilbug and Sanitarium Skeleton
RG FERIOCUS
Ferocious was a Tarkir mechanic that gave cards bonuses if you had a creature with 4 or more power. While not used by name it
shows up A LOT in the Historic card pool. This deck has a lot of cheap and efficient beaters (Orazca Frillback, Onakke Ogre) and a
lot of cards that pay off from having them (Colossal Majesty, Flames of the Raze-Boar, Stampede Rider). Green also has a lot of
fight and bite spells here which scale really well with having lots of power on board early game.
GW DINOSAURS
Dinos re-debuted in Ixalan and have been sprinkled throughout the game ever since. With a core of mana reducers (Kinjalli’s
Caller, Knight of the Stampede, Drover of the Mighty) you can get out game-closing cards like Sun-Crested Ptereadon, Thundering
Spineback, and the almighty Colossal Dreadmaw. Make sure not to overlook non-dino support cards fro the tribe like Pterdon Knight
and Thunderherd Migration.
WB Humans
Humans are the easy mode of tribal as they are all over the multiverse. With a core of Tribal payoffs (Sanctuary Lockdown,
Perimeter Sergeant and General Kudro) you go wide with cards like Daysqaud Marshal, Nightsquad commando, and Inspiring Captain
before smashing in for the win.
BG Reanimator
This pair uses the same black self mill cards as the UB deck but now wants you to cheat in fatties like Titanoth rex and Greater
Sandwurm with reanimator cards like Back for More, Blood for Bones and Cauldron’s Gift. Green also has a graveyard package with
cards like Hatchery Spider, Nature’s Spiral and Roar of the Wurm paying off from having a stacked yard.
UG Counters
Blue and green are the proliferate colors here. You get a +1/+1 counter on the field with a Brineborn Cutthroat, Aven Eternal,
Ironshell Beetle or Fertlid, then cards like Merfolk Skydiver and Kiora’s Dambreaker give you wild value. Proliferate works with
all counters as well so you can accelerate your blue Sagas or ramp up your Planeswalkers, which UG has the highest number of in
the set (Jace Weilder of Mysteries, Kasmina Enigmatic Mentor, Jiang Yanngu Wildcrafter and Saheeli, Sublime Artificer)
UR Noncreatures
The “just fill it in” archetype of magic giving Red and Blue an instant and sorceries and/or noncreature spells theme is a super
common one. On the backs of cheap cantrips and value spells like Opt, Crash Through, and Satyr’s Cunning you can mass up value on
cards like Spellgorger Weird, Sky Theatre Strix, and Sprite Dragon. Token Makers and cards with adventure also let you cast
noncreatures while still building up a board (Forbidden Friendship, Callous Dismissal, Rimrock Knight)
RW Knights
Similar to humans, the knight tribal package uses payoffs like Valiant Knight, Inspiring Veteran and Burning-Yard Trainer to pump
up cards like Rimrock Knights and Venerable Knights for massive damage. The most straightforward tribe here, this one is all about
the beatdown and has some solid bombs like The Circle of Loyalty and Kinsbalde Cavalier.
Side Themes
In addition to the main 10 draft themes, a megacycle of hybrid build-around cards are meant to seed “level 2” decks of various
color combos that can be put together for an alternate route fo victory
Fliers
There aren't THAT many fliers in the set but those in a white or blue core can play the classic tempo gameplan while backed up
with removal like Aerial assault and being pumped up by your Wingspan Mentor.
Trample
There is a crap ton of trample cards in this set, so while you are doing your curve out stompy thing, see if you can pick up Ram
Through, Proud Wildbonder or Hornbash Mentor to crush the enemy totally.
Note the mentors are in U/G which ties them into those colors Counters theme.
Enemy Mill
A lot of the self mill cards in the cube can be used on the enemy, so while stalling out with Merfolk Secretkeepr and Wall of Lost
Thoughts, your Ashiok can take them out the game. Blue and black also have a lot of bounce and kill spells to stall out the game
long enough for the mill kill.
Odd Cards
Obosh gives the classic draft stipulation deck building limit with many possibilities. Mixing black or green with red gives you
Ivy Elemental, which can fit any part of your curve, as well as three drops that scale very well with power bonuses like
Excvataion Mole and Deathgorg Scavenger. White has aggressive three drops like Kinjalli’s Sunwing and Terriotrial Hammerskul to
push through damage and of course, the BR burn em out plan is doable with Anax and Underworld Charger.
Kaheera
Kaheera takes the Dinosaur theme of the cube and branches it out by slotting in more cards. You give up non-dino assistance like
Aztocan Seer but trade them in for a lord as an 8th card and solid workhorses like Bloom Hulk and Fertilid.
Lurrus
Lurrus may have a strong restriction but its power more than makes up for it. Various Blue and black self mill cards can load up
your GY for value, black has several ways to reanimate ro recycle Lurrus if it dies, red has many cheap sac fodder creatures for
you to loop with Lurrus and most artifacts on the set gain value by being cats over and over again with Lurrus effect. Even a
white weenie beatdown plan is possible with Lurrus as a curve topper than reloads your action.
Deathtouch
The set has a load of deathtouch cards in it so Vraska shows ways to take advantage of that. Heartpiecer bow equipped to one is a
free murder a turn, you can also trade them off in combat only to loop them back with blacks reanimator package. Green's mass of
fight and bite cards like Ram Through and Band Together also let your 1/1s take down any enemy threat.
Activated Abilities
Zirda’s ability works very well in the BR sacrifice deck, where it cheapens the mana costs on a lot of your sac effects. It also
works well in UW or UR control builds with low permanent counts and lots of artifacts. Green’s mana dorks and incidental value
creatures can also slot into a the build where you ramp into Greater Sandwurms and Titanoth Rexes
.
Saheeli
Saheeli is a more open card choice meant to work with UW Historic builds with artifacts as well as UR noncreature builds and UG
proliferate builds where you can copy fatties while reloading Saheeli for her minus
Ramp
Kiora is a buy-in to the ferocious theme in green while also providing a ramp engine into fatties like Titanoth Rex and Thundering
Spineback.
The Cube is ever-evolving and I hope folks can enjoy it and give feedback for future improvements. Thanks for playing!
