Cloned from Sovereign's Simpler Times Small Set Cube

Imagine never taking a mulligan.
Imagine never getting mana screwed.
Imagine every opening hand allowing for multiple diverging lines of play.
This is a Sovereign's Cube

You can make your cube a "Sovereign's" cube for a night! Just pull out all of your non-basic lands and give it a whirl!

Overview

This low power cube is an ode to early kitchen table magic embracing a timeless classical fantacy aesthetic. Designed like a small set with commons, uncommons, and rares that appear in 4x, 2x, and 1x quantities, it features iconic creatures and spells from across the years that have long been power-crept out of the game as players know it today.

This cube has been specifically tailored to make it a fun, non-overwhelming entrypoint into magic which gives new players a glimpse into the game's long history, doesn't overwhelm them with individual card complexity, and will allow them to better appreciate high power level of future cubes they might play by way of comparison. In that spirit I've minimized unique mechanics, heavily utilized vanilla and french vanilla creatures, and have each color embodying its classical thematic and gameplay philosophy.

Only 10 mechanics present: Deathtouch, First Strike, Flashback, Flying, Haste, Hexproof, Reach, Regenerate, Trample, Vigilance

Sovereign's Rules
  • Before the draft begins use a random method to decide on 1, 2, or 3. This number is the 'Color Tax'

  • As a pregame action, pay the 'Color Tax' [1,2, or 3 life] for each unique color required to cast all spells in your library.

  • Every card can 'become' a basic land basically whenever it makes sense for the controlling player. This manifests in four ways:

    1. All cards in libraries are considered to be both spells and basic lands until they leave the library.

    2. Whenever a card leaves your library you must choose if you'd like it to be a basic land. If you chose 'basic land', exile and replace that card with a basic land of any color in that spell's mana cost from outside the game as a special action. (Functionally, the game treats this card as if it was always the replaced basic land)

    3. Exile a spell from your hand: Put a basic land of any color that is in that spell's mana cost into your hand from outside of the game. Activate only as a Sorcery. This is a special action. (Functionally, the game treats this card as if it was always the replaced basic land)

    4. Exile a spell from your graveyard: Put a basic land of any color that is in that spell's mana cost into your graveyard from outside of the game. Activate only as a Sorcery. This is a special action. (Functionally, the game treats this card as if it was always the replaced basic land)

Additional Stipulations
  • Common (4x), Uncommon (2x), and Rare (1x) cards are marked Black, Silver, and Gold respectively to provide drafters with that information during the draft.

  • Players cannot mulligan their opening hand.

  • The minimum deck size is 30 cards.

  • You do not lose the game if you would draw a card from an empty library.
