This overview is still a WIP, thanks for checking out my cube!
Classy Commons is a low powered 360(ish) card pauper cube with the goal of creating interesting game play with simple cards. It is meant to be a "palate-cleanser" cube, eschewing the complexity of higher power cubes in favor of good old fashioned creature combat and casting spells.
This cube was created in 2024, but I consider it be a continuation of my peasant (uncommons only) cube that I curated from 2017 to 2024 (https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/pbe). That cube went through several iterations, shifting in both size and its goal. As time went on, the cube gradually became both higher power and higher complexity, which I ultimately wasn't happy with.
I enjoy rarity-restricted cubes for having a smaller pool of cards to consider, but the reality is, the uncommons of today are not what they were in 2017. Commons too, have also gotten stronger and more capable of enabling interesting gameplay. With that realization, I decided to shift my peasant cube into a pauper (commons only) one, and I've given myself several other guardrails to help create the low powered experience I am looking for.
This is not a cube that solely aims to play the strongest commons in Magic. Plenty of powerful commons have been left out due to having game warping mechanics, complicated play patterns, or just not leading to interesting drafts/gameplay. I’ve also opted to exclude all cards that create tokens, to reduce overall board complexity and to make the cube easier to update and travel with.
Decks in this cube generally range from 2-3 colors. Rather than having prescriptive archetypes for each color combination, this cube supports different themes that can each be found across 2-4 colors. Drafters who focus on these themes can build to more synergistic decks based around one or more themes, while drafters who would prefer to just draft individually strong cards can build viable decks as well.
