About the cube

I've got inspired to make this cube by @BenjaminWheeler's One Drops cube which (at least on camera) looks like it packs a much bigger punch than anybody would expect from a cube consisting entirely of 1 cmc spells. However because of my hubris I wanted to go even bigger and dare I say better, and what's better than 1 if not 2? I love gold cards which are basically nonexistent at 1 cmc therefore I had to double that and go up to 2 which is just perfect. Therefore my restriction for this cube is that every card and every part of a card (split cards, adventures, etc.) in this cube have a cost of no more than 2. Because of the way I set that limitation Fire // Ice is a valid card for this cube even though technically it's a 4 cmc card but Giant Killer crosses the line because its adventure costs 3 mana.

My goal for this cube is to cultivate an environment where "cheap" cards feel much bigger and the impact of casting 2 drops feels similar to casting the biggest spells in the game. This goal is also supported by inclusion of ultimately "fair" cards that allow players to play a full game of Magic instead of just spectating how your opponent steamrolls you. Because of that cards that feel unbeatable (like Mother of Runes) or easily snowball out of control (like Pack Rat) got cut after the first draft.

Supported archetypes:
  • Go tall +1/+1 counters can be found in all five colours. Different colour combinations are going to support the counters strategy in different ways for example Simic is going to cast big X creatures like Hydroid Krasis that come in with X +1/+1 counters while Boros is going to grow small creatures on board with cards like Baird, Argivian Recruiter
  • Go wide tokens strategies can also be found in all five colours however Selesnya is most definitely the best at supporting tokens.
  • Aristocrats which can go both the tokens and creature recursion routes are supported to the surprise of literally nobody in Mardu.
  • Graveyard strategies that utilize self mill and gain card advantage by ways of card recursion are supported in Sultai.
  • Artifact support can be found in all colours except for green (although Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter can be considered as artifacts support in green).
  • Enchantress is supported in Selesnya but can splash for blue and red for cards like Cartouche of Knowledge or Cartouche of Zeal.
  • Heroic and to a certain extend combat tricks are supported in Naya.
Additional rules:
  • This cube uses snow-covered basics however because I'm cheap currently the actual factual basics I own are not snow. So just pretend like they are :)
  • Every player starts the draft with a copy of Cogwork Librarian in their draft pool. During matches instead of choosing the first player randomly player who has more Librarians in their pool starts. Ties are broken by Cogwork Librarians number, player with a lower numbered Librarian starts in that case.
