30 years after Magic's first set, then just called Magic: The Gathering, now known as Alpha (first print run) or Beta (second one) - or Unlimited for all further print runs which nobody ever uses - we celebrate Magic's first set by showcasing its themes- with a bit of help from Magic's long and eventful history since then!

The set uses packs with 8-10 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare/mythic and the tried and tested flexible land slot (2/1/1/0 lands per pack). The land slot has ABU dual lands and USG monocolor cycling lands. There's also a second special slot in the packs which I call the Alpha Nostalgia slot. Every third pack will have a (very weak) card from Alpha which in that case replaces a common. And then one Alpha basic in every pack for decorative purposes :D

This set uses what I call the CAS - the Complete Archetype System. Every color combination features two distinct archetypes, and all 20 of those are represented roughly equally in the set. In addition, you have manafixing (the original dual lands) and overlapping themes in all 3-color combinations, which means that you can draft 3-color decks that are also synergistic.

There are also definitely alternative ways to draft all of these. You can basically start in any 2-color archetype and branch out from there, so for example, you could for example draft a Mardu aggro deck with a fliers theme, or a more controlling ramp-y big spell version of Jund. The set is built in such a way that there is always going to be at least some overlap.
