My playgroup always plays with an additional rule, but it's still fun without it:
We call these Free Spells.
Drafting isn't necessary. In between rounds of regular limited, I'll pull out two stacks of roughly 60 cards from the cube and say "Here's your deck, you have infinite mana and you can play one spell per turn."
If you have time, drafting the cube is even better. 4 packs of 15 each - no sideboards.
If you have first-timers, I'd suggest doing Rochester Draft. This way you can discuss the picks, and everyone can see every card that's drafted. (Packs are drafted one at a time, face up.)
Solomon Draft is also great for 2-player drafting. (Every Pack is a Fact or Fiction)
Try it out and let me know what you think!

HISTORYLimited Infinity (aka Type 4) is a format from the early 2000's, created by Paul Mastriano.
This stack of cards is designed to be drafted among however many players you have, then played either head-to-head, or in a multiplayer game.
The original decklist is in the link at the beginning of this primer, but it only has 230ish cards. I built a stack of those cards, and added new things to it over the years until it got too full of good removal.
In 2023, I calculated the ratios to an increase to 500 cards total, and removed all of the tutors (because people who aren't familiar with the cards will slow the game down DRASTICALLY when searching and reading every card).
This is the revamped and updated 2025 Limited Infinity Type 4 Stack.
In the most recent update, I've completely removed all Masticores as well as Damage Prevention cards. I increased the number of Draw spells, but reduced the power level of the cards themselves.
I found that a lot of the incredibly powerful cards could really swing matches until the controller eventually just won through sheer card advantage.
Even with infinite mana, these were too much.
I set some strict rules for myself while doing the most recent update:
DRAWThere's still some tweaking to do, but this was my thought process.
UPDATE 2/26/2025
Drafted among 10 players this past weekend, and had a BLAST with the newest iteration of it. Games felt super balanced, one game ended by decking, another ended by winning with zero cards left in their library and casting Storm of Souls to bring back Whip Sergeant and Sunscape Master for a lethal 3/3 army. Could not be happier.
They did have some feedback though!
OUT | IN | WHY |
---|---|---|
Mist Dragon | Pristine Angel | Mist Dragon was basically unkillable. You needed Split Second removal, or its controller needed to WANT it dead. I've replaced it with another reasonably-hard-to-remove creature of the same stats, but it's much easier to remove. |
Metathran Aerostat | Destructor Dragon | A player drafted Metathran Aerostat and asked "Wait, can't I just hold priority and activate this a bunch of times to dump my hand?" and it turns out they were right! Not how I intended it to work, so I replaced it with a more reasonable card that I just got a misprint of. |
Elspeth, Sun's Nemesis | Grist, the Hunger Tide | I originally looked at Elspeth After Dark and thought that with abilities as small and unimpactful as hers, she would be fine. After playing with her, the fact that Escape doesn't count as your spell for the turn is OPPRESSIVE. So I'm replacing her with a planeswalker that can be recurred easily, but not quite that easily. |
Fevered Suspicion | Reversal of Fortune | There was some confusion whether the additional spell counted as your spell for the turn, negating the intended use. Rather than clear up this confusion every time, I thought I'd replace it with something similar that's much more clear. |
Artistic Refusal | Memory Lapse | Originally I thought this card read "Choose one", not "Choose one or both". That is a huge difference in power level, so I'm replacing it with another counterspell to bring that slot in line with the rest of the cube. |
