What is the June Cube
My personal cube passion project built in attempts to replicate the kind of magic I fell in love with. When I was too young to buy whatever cards I wanted and made do with whatever random commons and uncommons I could get along with a few exciting rares which now look like bulk but were once the prize of my possessions. The June cube will let me play with some of my old favorites' as well as the gameplay I once loved games of trying to play your weaker cards in such a way they feel strong. When designing this cube I hope for lots of little advantages to be won and lost.
Despite my goal at playing at the lower power of my initial days of magic. My love of magic has changed slightly those games are still what I love as a player but my second love in magic is design. So with the constraints of how I once loved the game I have dove right in to making that fun even for people that won't have the same nostalgia I do.
How to achieve these goals?
Good old low curving magic!!
The cards might be weaker than in many power maxed cubes but hopefully the mana curve will stay close to that of my cubes more powerful cousins. With a low curve every player will get to take actions and make choices at all points in the game.
Combat focused!
When I used to play magic every point of life mattered every deck wanted to win the race. A control deck was just a bigger midrange deck so moving to emphasize combat is a huge part of how I plan to achieve my goals.
Synergy!
Nothing felt cooler growing up then realizing you could make your cards better than they looked. Trading for a card that your friend thought was bad but you knew you could make work. I hope to replicate that in my drafts the joy of getting a card passed to you that your friends underestimated and then using it to win! At a lower power I can play around with the synergies optimize the gameplay I desire and have the flexibility to strengthen or weaken decks I wouldn't at power max.
Speaking of Synergy? What strategies could you try?
A note that this cube is over 360 cards to re-create the joy of not knowing exactly what cards your friends had and that surprise when you don't expect something. The concern with that is that not all decks will have the pieces available to be optimized within the environment
Flicker
Based in blue and white though open to splashing as good enters the battlefield abilities are dotted all over the cube look out for
Graveyard
Moving through all the color's of sultai you will find interactions with the graveyard
Aristocrats
Losing your own creatures to gain value this deck spans everything in mardu ranging in speed from aggressive red based decks to a slower orzhov deck take this wherever your heart calls. Death by a thousand cuts I suppose
Discard/ Draw too
By design you won't always have the best cards in your hand this deck based in grixis hopes to turn its bad cards better
Lands
We once thought lands were boring how wrong we have been. If you can make your lands valuable you'll be playing all action in your deck!
Modified
Kamigawa introduced us to a new batch to base naya out of this deck cares about changing your creatures with aura's counters and equipement
This deck also leads to the classic heroic deck heralded by these wondeful royals our most aggressive deck
Plenty of strategies were not mentioned those will be your job to find! I hope to be suprised time and again
Feel free to mix strategies and synergies this is encouraged in design as it emulates piecing together a deck of effects that kind of work that you must do without an expansive collection.
This cube is in constant update as I do get a lot of joy of letting my 9 year old self look at new cards and get excited some power outliers might be found I ask for patience as this is still very much a new experiment
