This is a Battle Box, a cube designed to be played out of the box without drafting. Here is a recent overview of the Battle Box format in case you are unfamiliar: https://infinite.tcgplayer.com/article/Building-a-Battle-Box/7e555f1f-e493-4d89-b1ab-dab4db1c27df/
The theme is "Old School". Most of the cards are from the original core set (Alpha) and earliest expansions. The idea is to recreate some of the "magic" from that earlier era with cards that are no longer playable.
I took some liberties with my interpretation of "Old School". Most significantly, I allowed cards through Weatherlight. Mirage/Visions/Weatherlight was a block that really took Magic design to the next level, and allowing for these cards really opens up some better gameplay than what would be available without this set.
Additionally, I use Invasion lands, even though they aren't really "Old School", because the game play is more interesting than using the original dual lands.
The nature of Battle Box, specifically playing a land every turn, means that certain expensive legends have much less downside. These games can be decided quickly if one person draws aggro cards and the other stumbles, but often the games are decided by huge Legends--frequently the original Elder Dragons. This is the format the original Nicol Bolas was designed to dominate!!
