Silverback cube aims for a power level below most cubes but above a normal limited environment. It is based around 10 color pair
archetypes. Each archetype has 4 signpost gold cards as well as a related colorless artifact.
Emphasis is placed on instant speed interaction with lots of instants and flash. Where possible the cube tries to represent some
"classic magic" feeling with Knights, Dragons, and Skeletons. There is a smattering of sub-tribes that can take advantage of a few
tribal payoff cards.
There is almost no exile, and a lot of removal is damage-based. There is no artifacts-matter theme, so the ones in the cube are
meant to support most decks in a generic sense of ramp, fixing, card advantage, etc.
The Archetypes
WU- FlyersOne of two "tribal" representations in the cube. WU flyers is an aggressive, tempo-based archetype that uses flying
lords to buff the team. Its artifact is ???
WB - Life Gain/DrainBlack offers a lot of direct damage spells that also gain life, and white spells that gain life. Together
these two colors make the most out of life currency by gaining lots and paying for stronger effects. Aetherflux Reservoir is the
archetype's artifact, although WR Spellslinger would happily take it too.
WR - Spellslinger ControlAn inversion of the expected aggro shell, WR is a spells-based control deck. Red and white sweepers
control the board. Unlike traditional control decks, this archetype will rely on X-for-1 spells, recursion, and other atypical
ways of keeping ahead on card advantage. Its artifact is Mirari.
WG - Aura EnchantressA more aggressive take on the typical enchantress archetype. Stack auras on things, get +1/+1 counters, and
draw off Constellation triggers. Its artifact is Helm of the Gods.
RG - Lands MatterSimilar to the UB archetype, RG will try to be discarding cards from their hand for value. Specifically land
cards. There are a smattering of Landfall effects too. This plays as a control deck, using Seismic Assault and Ayula's Influence
to turn lands in hand into threats/answers. Crucible of Worlds is intended to allow the deck to function while still making land
drops to the board.
UG - TempoGroThe archetype with arguably the best name, TempoGro uses Flash and cards that grow in size to snowball quickly. Well
timed tempo spells should keep an opponent off balance while its tiny threats grow into lethal ones. Artifact is ???
UB - CyclingThis is a control-ish archetype that looks to cycle cards for additional benefits. Key cards include Drake Haven and
Faith of the Devoted. Fluctuator turns the dial to 11.
UR - 2nd Spell/Draw
A hybrid between TempoGro and Spellslinger. This archetype asks you to play on strange terms, e.g. "when you cast your second
spell" or "when you draw your second card" with a powerful engine to grind out games. Strionic Resonator can turn the many
triggered abilities into insane value.
BG - Grave AggroUsing the Haste keyword and a suite of graveyard-centric abilities, this archetype presents an early aggressive
front that's resilient to removal. What is a sweeper to the army of undead? Merely a speedbump. Desecrated Tomb provides ample
opportunity to generate additional threats from recursion.
BR - Big Dragons
The other "tribal" deck. The game plan with this archetype is to find color accessible ramp through rituals, rocks, and doublers.
Throw out some weaker dragons to stave off early threats until you begin dropping the strongest creatures in the cube. Or cheat
the system and reanimate them ahead of curve! Dragon's Hoard is the artifact for this deck, providing both card advantage and
ramp.
