Unpowered Legacy Cube

My discord to discuss Cube and other Magic related things : https://discord.com/invite/3pSHBfsMD2

I'm a retired Pro Player and nowadays, Cube is my main way to enjoy Magic in a casual competitive setting. I've maintened a Cube since 2004 in diverse shapes or forms. For the last ten years, that form is a Legacy Cube made to be drafted by 6 to 8 players.

Card selection reflects competitive Magic, that is to say I try to include cards that performs in tournament more than cards which never perform or never performed.

My Cube is unpowered because I don't love Powered Cube in casual settings. When I play with my friends I want highly interactives games in which gameplay matters. For the same reasons, I chose not to include two-cards combo like Splinter Twin / Exarch nor cards that tend to win the game by themselves like Opposition, Upheaval or Natural Order.

Cube is mostly Foiled, cards that aren't in Foil aren't for esthetic preference like Force of Will or Chain Lightning. Duals are in French Black Border and I remember opening two of them, Tundra and Plateau.
I don't love alternate card arts nor altered cards, so nothing like that in my Cube.

  • Why 360 ?

I tried different sizes and I find that more different decks are possible in small sized Cubes than in big ones. Especially fringe archetypes like Lands.dec.

  • Why no card X ?

Some cards have been cut out of the Cube for power reasons over the years :P9, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Drain, Mind Twist, Library of Alexandria, Treachery, Shelldock Isle, Griselbrand, Balance, Upheaval, Opposition, Vedalken Shackles, Forbid, Mystic Confluence, True Name Nemesis, Winter Orb, Strip Mine, Oko, Thief of Crowns, Nexus of Fate, Shrine of Burning Rage, Embercleave, Hexdrinker, Nissa Who Shakes the World, Umezawa's Jitte, Teferi, Time Raveler, and Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath

Most of those cuts aren't made purely for power reasons. Like Winter Orb or Balance aren't too powerful but they makes the games way longer and they don't add much more fun to them. Some cards are a bit miserable to play against like Hexdrinker or Teferi, Time Raveler. And some cards hose fun archetypes and I prefer cutting a card and let fun decks live. Best exemple of that is Forbid which solely kills any form of non-Blue Control deck and that's unfun.

  • Why so few Planeswalkers ?

To limit Walkers numbers over the years, I only include one Walker per name. So for example I have Jace, Vryn's Prodigy in the Cube so I don't play Beleren or Mindsculptor. I find Cubes with too many Walkers a bit boring since the correct strategy is often to accumulate as many as possible and play them with sweepers and ramp.
