The Grindy Stack

My first stack iterated over years. It's designed to create a grindy playstyle. To do that there are a few design principles I followed when creating this stack:

  • Cards should require work or multiple turns to get more than 2:1, unless they're sweepers.
  • Bombs should not win just by untapping with them for 1 turn, they should win the game over time.
  • Life should feel like an actual resource.
Stack (Format) Summary

Stack is a pick-up and play format designed to start games quickly with a new group. It involves a large collection of cards that act as collective deck and all players take cards to form their own decks to play. It is most similar to Battlebox.

Rules Changes

Since everyone has their own deck, there are fairly few rules changes, but they can have significant effects on play:

  • Any card may be played face down as a Utopia land (has all basic land types). If that land returns to your hand, it returns as the card it was.
  • Because you can always take new cards if you need to replenish your deck, there is no "bottom of the deck". Any effects that require putting cards on the bottom of your deck should instead exile those cards face-down.
  • Because your deck is effectively larger than just the cards in your physical deck, you may never search your library.
