Entry Level "Set" Cube
This cube was designed around the restriction of: "What would a cube WOTC could sell look like?"
Cubes are often expensive so it couldn't undermine the secondary market value.
It also couldn't have such poor estimated value that it wouldn't be worth it to buy vs. just build on your own.
Its projected cost point needed to be similar to products of similar size. (Think 2 bundles [10 draft packs])
It couldn't be too complex. Draft experience should be similar to a core set draft. Avoid complicated mechanics.
It should convey the feel of Magic. It should have lots of iconic (Angel, Sphinx, Demon, Dragon, and Hydra) and characteristic (Soldier, Merfolk, Zombie/Vampire, Goblin, Elf) creature types.
It should have at least a tribal subtheme
Needs to support 4-8 players
Needs to be new player friendly
Needs to be replayable
Needs to have the multicolored signal post cards for each draft archetype
Should have cards that work in different archetypes. This helps to combine archetypes when splashing a 3rd color, but also forces players to compete for cards in the draft.
From these a restrictions some new guidelines for this cube were created.
The cube couldn't be singleton. That would be too complex for new players. It would follow a normal draft experience.
The cube would be the smallest it could be to support 8 players. (360 cards)
360 Cards at 15 cards per pack, makes for 24 packs. So 24 Rares/Mythics (18/6), 72 uncommons, 264 commons
Try to push value in all rarities. By either having valuable cards or playable cards outside of this cube. But must serve the archetypes and align with previous restrictions.
Cube would support multicolor, but will be mostly monocolored cards
Enemy and Allied pairs would be equally supported
360 Cards/ 24 Packs should roughly equate ~$100 price point. That is too high for entry level, needs to be about half that at least.
Break the cube into 2 mini cubes. Ally and Enemy colors. This allows for the price point to drop to 40 to 50 dollar range for each mini cube and still support the minimum 4 players. This would likely be ideal as it may be hard for players to get an 8 player pod when 1st starting. The other mini cube can then be seen as an "expansion".
