400 cards + single deck + no setup + just play

What is "17 LANDS":

This is a 400 card deck that you simply shufle and play Magic the Gathering with.

This is not a partybox/battlebox. Those formats allow you to play lands either face down or from exile - thereby the gameplay is not "standard". This Is more akin to DanDan - ie. you share a deck, yes, but in all other respects play regular-ass Magic.

So it all started with a question. Would it be possible to create a DanDan style huge "deck" from my collection that is left over from the main cube that would be:

  1. playable by two or more players sharing a deck;
  2. five colors;
  3. would ONLY consist of staples, famous cards or in general cards that everyone knows - the "hall of fame" in a single deck;
  4. would be a history lesson to play?

My main cube (https://www.cubecobra.com/cube/overview/kulvokuubik) has a very specific design filossophy (low curve + extremely high-powerlevel), so a lot of cool and "must-know" cards are left out. Into "17 LANDS" I will include cards solely on fame-level - even if they are not the most powerful card in any given slot.

A player will experience the play paterns of the "hall of fame cards" of Magic and if that means 17 LANDS will not be fair and will have luck play a huge role in individual games then so be it. Freedom isn't free!

400 cards because then it is just a glorified and very large draft deck and easy to calculate how many lands you need - #17lands - i.e. 170 lands give-or-take.

17 LANDS specific rules:

  1. no setup - shuffle and draw 7;
  2. players share a deck but do not share a graveyard;
  3. regular constructed best of 3 gameplay;
  4. exile all cards played in the previous round so that: no shufling between rounds needed + singleton carries through all games.

Let's see how this works out.

Open questions:

  1. will the manabase work?
  2. is there enough interraction?
  3. is a deck with such a high power-level-difference between cards even "fun" - i.e. does the "coolness factor" make up for what is most likely going to be a sub-par gameplay experience?

So far playtesting has shown that it kinda works. Fun and varied games.

17 LANDS - in refference to the fact it has roughly 170 lands out of 400 cards and the website of the same name;

PS: alternative names for the new "format":

  1. The 400 - in refference to Leonidas and the 300; or
  2. The Wheel - in refference to the fact that this is not really anything new at all and I am simply reinventing the wheel by making a 400 card draft/constructed deck and treating it as if it were a whole new thing :D.
