This Small Card cube supports several formats of play, the goal is quick fire games with a few tough choices, and a challenging draft experience to take full advantage of the unique Pai Gow ruleset.

Deck Types

With three card decks traditional cube archetypes are not supported directly, but most decks will fall into a few categories of how they are trying to win.

3+ Player Pai Gow
  • 2 packs of 8 cards are drafted by the players, this cube is mostly focused on a 4 player game. (Or your favorite draft/sealed method)
  • Players build 5 3 card decks and put the 16th card back in the box.
  • Each game players choose one of their decks and put all cards in hand.
  • Players have 5 life, unlimited mana in 2 colors of choice, can't be decked, and the player who finished building their decks first goes first.
  • Stalling Rule: If a player does nothing for 2 turns in a row they take 1 damage.
  • When a player wins they put their deck back in the box, once a player has returned 3 decks to the box they win.
  • The player to the left of the winner goes first next game, you may never select a deck if that would make you have played that deck 2 more times than any other deck (You must play through each deck once, then each deck twice, so on.)
2 Player
  • While Pai Gow is traditionally a 2 player format, my cube is focused on 4 player and will have somewhat higher variance in 2 player.
  • Use your favorite 2 player draft system to give 15 or 16 cards to each player before players build their decks.
  • Recommended Draft: Collect 44 cards from the cube and roll for a first player, deal 4 cards face up, and have the first player draft 1 card, 2nd player draft two, then put the last card back in the box. Repeat alternating first player until the 44 card pile is empty. The first player will have 16 cards and 6 first picks, the 2nd player will have 17 cards with 5 first picks.
  • Rules are the same as 4 player, but players will usually play each deck only once barring draws.
Advanced 2 Player
  • Use your favorite 2 player draft system to give 15 or 16 cards to each player before players build their decks.
  • Players choose their decks simultaneously rather than at random.
  • Instead of returning their cards to the box, players put won decks to the side.
  • After a player wins 3 decks, they have won the first round and the game is reset
  • After a reset deal 4 cards faceup, the loser chooses to take 1 card, or let the winner take 1 card from the pile. Then the other player takes 2 cards with the last going back in the box.
  • Players each build 5 more decks, however winners cannot rebuild any of the decks they won with.
  • First player to win 2 rounds wins.
5 Card Pai Gow
  • Follow any other format, but build 3 decks of 5 cards each, Start with 2 cards in hand and 3 cards in library.
  • Win with 2 decks to claim victory.
  • The Stalling Rule does not apply if a player drew a card on their turn.

Uncommon Rules

  • Players still have a draw step in their upkeep to gain a card.
