This cube is where familiarity meets ingenuity. Where solid meets ceiling. Where unlikely allies meet unintended combos.
While you were drafting the most recent set release--daydreaming about your next FNM draft that was really starting to click--did you ever reflect on other cards you had just seen in other sets and catch yourself wondering:
"What if my Mischievous Mystic came with that unblockable looter?", or
"What if I could have just used this one 3-drop to solve my Case of the Gateway Express?", or
"What if Heartfire Hero was still around and even more busted?"
Well what if I told you a single cube held all of these combos, and dozens more that you hadn't even considered? What if that cube didn't have any groan-inducing rares to rain on that good old fashioned limited parade? And what if that cube had mana-fixing that wasn't just the same old tap-lands?
This is that cube. Your favorite cube's favorite cube.
This is the best of the Peasant best from recent memory: the usual suspects that you've just seen week in and week out at your FNM drafts, mashed together and pitted against each other in a no-holds-barred battle royale for limited supremacy. There has been no playtesting, no rebalancing for fairness. Just the strongest of the strong, by invitation only, supported by powerful fixing so they can fire on all cylinders. The only ceiling is where your imagination and hard-fought limited experience can take you.
This is The Limited All-Star Peasant+ Cube.
The "all-star" cards are the Top 10 performing commons and Top 5 performing uncommons for each color/supported color pair from each of the last 5 Standard-legal sets, plus most of the playable colorless cards for maximum authenticity. The sets currently in the cube are:
DMU - BRO - ONE - MOM - WOE - LCI - OTJ - MKM - BLB - DSK - FDN
These cards are identified, for better or worse, based solely on 17Lands' public data for the Game-In-Hand Winrate% for each card on the Arena Premier Draft ladder for ALL decks, using only the top quartile of all 17Lands users' data, after the set was rotated out of the ladder on MTGA. Cards were added top to bottom down the list, with an arbitrary # of cards before the cutoff to achieve a cube size of ~550 cards: 10 at common, 5 at uncommon.
This approach is the simplest and most obviously flawed: Some clear cons are card strength over-simplification, archetype & theme blindness, and a cutoff number based solely on card count and not power level; some of the clear and maybe only pros are sheer efficiency and ease of maintaining the cube with new sets. If you have any ideas regarding a better and more true-to-form method of identifying the all-star commons and uncommons from each set that can still be uniformly applied without "adjusting", i.e. introducing subjectivity into the card selection, I'd love to hear them. Leave a comment and let's talk!
Mana-fixing is the "Plus" (+) in this "Peasant+" cube. A complete set of all shocks, fetches, tri-lands, surveil-lands, and check-lands has been included, as well as four 5-color mana fixing lands in one each of Fabled Passage, Pristmatic Vista, City of Brass, and Mana Confluence. The hope is that the power of this eternal mana base facilitates smoother gameplay for all color combinations than the set-by-set tap-land fixing would, and allows the strength of these modern-Magic all-star commons & uncommons to shine.
