I have to first give a shoutout to u/ConcernedAboutCrows. That user's Innistrad cube was the inspiriation and foundation for this cube. My goal was to take the Innistrad theme put forth in that cube and add my own thoughts. Like the original cube, this cube is not a faithful recreation of any particular Innistrad draft environment, nor is it exclusively cards set on Innistrad. I wanted to proivde an environment that included all things gothic horror like the plane itself. It is a celebration of horror, nostalgia, and the beloved tortured thing that bumps in the night. Above all else, it is a love letter to my Innistrad.
This cube is built around 10 two color archetypes. There are the classic monster tribes, and of course the humans to die and slay and struggle against them, but foremost this is an environment obsessed with the graveyard. Flashback, self mill, reanimation, and bunches of different ways to make death matter.
Some design choices were made for them over function. The biggest offender of this is the inclusion of the full cycle of Innistrad utility lands. Even though Kessig Wolf Run is more useful for its archetype than Stensia Bloodhall I wanted to include both because each of the lands depict a different landscape within the Innistrad.
The land cycle for allied and enemy color pairs also differs based on what is available from Innistrad sets. I do not think that this is a major issue though. The slow lands are better in the early game while the check lands of the enemy color pairs are better top decks in the late game. I hope that this will even out over time.
Archetypes
Humans must stand together to survive the night (+1/+1 counters, Humans, Coven- go wide)
The howlpack hunts in moonlight (Werewolves, Wolves, Transform)
Give yourself to the bloodlust (Vampires, +1/+1 counters, damage matters)
Master the grave with your undead minions (Zombies, sacrifice)
Spirits haunt the other inhabitants of Innistrad (Flying, tapping down creatures, graveyard matters)
Let's live forever. The corrupted clergy of Innistrad offer sacrifices to appease and resurrect dark forces (Life matters, death triggers, reanimator)
By any means necessary, an empty grave craves to be filled (Delirium, Graveyard size)
Natural monsters grow through consumption (+1/+1 counters, Graveyard matters)
The mad scientist pursues forbidden magic (Instant & Sorcery matters, Flashback)
Gather your forces at dusk to greet the dawn (Generic Aggro, Day//Night)
A note on organization: All off color flashback/activated abilities are not considered for the purposes of color organization. Just think of it as extra value for playing the cards in the right color combo. Color balancing that ended up not being worth it for me.
