Lorescale coatl is cool but its power feels like it has been crept out. And there is no longer the option to remove counters to draw cards over and over so that synergy is gone. Simic Baleful Strix is a good roadblock and offers a powerful mana sink later for ramp decks.
Cephalopod sentry has been replaced, more or less, by Guidelight Synergist in white. And i like adding in a mini sphinx's revelation for slower controlling artifact decks.
I wanted a RW gold removal spell for a bit. And i want to try integrity/intervention as a flexible pump spell and removal spell.
A number of cards that are slight upgrades or do similar things in slightly different ways. Most interestingly perhaps is that the chain of smog / Storm-kiln artist infinite combo has been lackluster - not a good enough payoff (while witherbloom apprentice is probably too strong).
Dredger's insight and ooze patrol offer some more self mill in green (it was currently lacking). Ooze patrol seems a pretty reasonable replacement for wickerfolk with higher upside albeit a lower floor. Syr Faren has been hard to cast on turn 2 with the GG cost in an environment that is often 2-4 colours, especially in green.
Fiery temper has proven less than useful in that red has less and less discard in it and reckless pyrosurfer is good but I've been meaning to reduce the aggression a little and offering some more expensive value spells in red seems sweet.
A few underperformers are coming out and a few ways to interestingly support Living Lore are coming in.
Flux channeler has felt too niche, too hard to successfully make work and a 3 mana 2/2 is a hard sell in this environment. Slip out the back is cool but I've wanted to try something else for a while.
As I mentioned with the white changes, foundry inspector has been medium. Memory garden is a cool way to offer a strong, cheap spell once as an artifact payoff.
Into the roil and candlestick have been medium inclusions, often 23rd cards in lists. I like the idea of offering some interesting flexibility in these slots with hybrid mana. These split spells also offer a powerful thing to do with Living Lore.
Its been a minute since changes were made to the cube, here are some updates based on recent downshifts and printings:
Unwanted remake was fine but i've wanted to add more cycling into the cube for a while
Guardian of the forgotten has often felt like a 23rd card that doesn't offer what I thought it would. Celestial archon is an interesting downshift that offers similar top end value to an enchantress deck while also increasing the density of auras.
Glimmer seeker suffers a similar problem - its mostly a 3 mana 3/3. Thats still fine, obviously but for a synergy focused cube its a little uninteresting. Eidolon (an upshift of all things!) Offers a blend between cheap enchantment creature and lifelinker that fits multiple roles nicely.
Lastly, chief of the foundry (and foundry inspector) have fallen out of favor recently. they're being replaced by other artifact creatures that offer a little more on their own.
I wanted to improve some of the support for iraxxa, princess of mars. There was already some support in red but I felt like I wanted a little more - in not drafts she has felt hard to get running without completely putting blinders on.
Poetic glyph feels "safer" now that there are fewer indestructible artifact lands.
Living lore has had a boost from some of the expensive spells that flip to lands and the split cards (and it's cool)
Rob the archives is a good choice without casualty, offering more options in sacrifice decks looking for specific cards.
I love cascade so volcanic torrent seems a good fit!
After playing a couple drafts of cube and of Duskmourn, I'm trying out a few cards.
Notable choices:
Removing Dargo and Danitha makes me sad but both have been underperforming and underpicked.
Oath of the grey host has never seen play, it's probably a little too slow.
Cutting the indebted spirit and the Triton WAvebreaker seems a little premature as they've not been tested much but they're also very underwhelming.
To help curb creature combo and help white and blue double spell on the draw to keep pressure off
It feels like UB needs a repeatable discard outlet back and that it needs it in the gold slot - both as a hard to poach card and as a signpost. Vohat is great, lazav has felt like a medium card.
Finally it starts - the overhaul set in motion by the printing of nearly 50 desirable cards in MH3.
HUGE changes for the lands - having flip lands is a big fat deal and these all add fascinating angles to the cube that weren't there before (and also massively increase the value of bounce lands)
Reducing the number of artifact lands does mean the artifact decks might suffer but more artifacts have been added elsewhere and the jeskai artifact lands stick around regardless.
Finally it starts - the overhaul set in motion by the printing of nearly 50 desirable cards in MH3.
Lion umbra is a strong card, and cheaper. Snake umbra is good but i like this more
Trickster's elk offers an enchantment replacement of cloak and cloak's dredge hasn't mattered as much as I'd like
Collective resistance costs more but offers massive flexibility over snakeskin veil
signature slam adds another removal spell to green (which needed it) - midnight shuttle hasn't been picked at all
hunter's talent is a strong removal and value card and an enchantment - a clear upgrade over the tandem takedown
Surrak vs culler - bigger beef, more value!
Lots of this here but ... fangs of kalonia is a little more expensive on the front of it than scale up but yowza it offers a massive upside
Wildwood scourge has been great but i really want to try the trainer so ... +1 counter synergy card gets replaced by another, different one.
Propagator drone and hunger tide make tokens (and adds another saga enchantment) and grizzly fate and terravore are fun but less strong than I'd like.
Finally it starts - the overhaul set in motion by the printing of nearly 50 desirable cards in MH3.
Red gets the fewest changes!
Battle cry goblin is probably better than pyrosurfer but is misleading to people looking for lots of goblins (of which there are very very few)
Skittering precursor replaces Mahadi more than engineer but engineer hasn't been great and they're both 3 drop token makers
Blacksmith's talent makes 2 game tokens and offers similar abilities to the axe
Similarly, thermo alchemist and otter mage are similar - but otter also does more for the go wide decks
Heartfire hero can't use its power to trade for creatures but it definitely pushes aggro and offers growing bigger and bigger with equipment (and is busted with grafted wargear)
Finally it starts - the overhaul set in motion by the printing of nearly 50 desirable cards in MH3.
Marionette apprentice combines weaponcraft enthusiast and psychomancer into a single card
Etched slith does counter synergies and re-buys saga abilities for the slightly elusive GB saga manipulation deck
Gary is probably a better card than wurmcoil but wurmcoil offers more synergies and is still powerful. Both help stabilize and gain life
Nezumi prowler has underperformed and the cleric replaces the effect in BW to allow more B+x life synergies
Edgar's awakening is very bad in comparison to other reanimate cards in the cube now and discarding it has been mediocre, consuming corruption seems like a potentially powerful removal and lifegain spell
Finally it starts - the overhaul set in motion by the printing of nearly 50 desirable cards in MH3.
Eddymurk crab is an easier to cast sailor's bane that trades ward for a bit more tempo equity
Brainsurge replaces an underperforming artistic refusal
Tamiyo acts similarly to case but buys more time, makes more tokens and overlaps with discard
Otterball and triton wavebreaker make more prowess dudes and replace underperformers (and fluxmage is getting a replacement in nesting grounds)
Emrakul's messenger is less snowbally than mechanic but flies and makes ramp and tokens.
Reef worm and copycrook offer interesting synergies and replace cards that were good but not necessarily key players
