Bruenor is MIA, so Akiri is back in the mix! (At least until I can get another Bruenor.)
I think I cut the wrong vampire recently. I'd rather have the versatility over the power.
Also, I'm glad to see the +1/+1 counter deck get a boost!
Well, I guess my wish finally came true in a non-monkey’s paw fashion! Thanks to Duskmourn, I can pull most of the disguise from the cube and add manifest dread instead – so much better! (I am keeping Vanifar, because she does so much for other archetypes.)
Also, MH3 has done wonders for the eldrazi theme, although I don’t know if the ingest cards are as reliable now. (Then again, it might not need to be.)
There are a few cuts I am not sure about.
I want to test Nahiri, although I really liked my Boros section – especially the fact that many of the other gold cards there were warriors.
Helm of the Host always wound up in people’s sideboards, but the one in twenty games where it would be good is exactly the kind of bug gameplay moments I was hoping this cube could create. We’ll see if it ever makes its way back in.
Ulamog’s Reclaimer fills some interesting space, but I don’t know how reliable ingest will be after these edits. If it seems like I can make room for it again, it goes a long way towards stabilizing.
Obscuring Aether is a do-nothing late game, but can also provide crucial velocity for Simic when played on turn 1.
Sagu Mauler isn’t as splashy as it was back in the day, but it still makes for beefy top-end and I suspect Simic needs a way to close the game quickly before it decks itself.
There are actually two more cards I really need to find space for, but I need to do some analysis on these edits first, to see where I might find room. I’m excited to see how this all plays out!
Be careful what you wish for, I guess. I was hoping for more cards for Simic at some point, and here they are. I don't love mixing morph with disguise for tracking board state reasons, but the archetype needs to keep up with the others and this is the best way to do so.
There are still a few cards in the mail that I need to add, but I will add them once I open some more MH3 devoid cards.
Notable cut - Brine Elemental. No more chance for "pickles lock", but that's likely for the best.
Keeping half an eye on Forensic Gadgeteer too.
Starnheim was just too strong - in testing I would draft it no matter what deck I was in. The opposite was true of Guide-Mural; there just aren't enough artifacts in a typical Azorius deck to run it.
I'm hoping that power creep is enough to keep a 3 mana 2/2 at bay, and it felt weird to cut Procession, so I'm glad that it's back in.
I decided to cut a few cards that no longer sparked joy, and at least two of the power outlier cards. Fractured Identity was meant as a strong incentive to go into Azorious, but it just carried games all on its own.
Adeline never actually got out of control, but it was only a matter of time, I suspect.
A good number of changes to make this time around, although for the most part it's just shifting upgrades around in a (hopefully) balanced fashion.
Some notables: Geist had to go. It is too mainstream for this cube, and doesn't really fit with what UW likes to do best.
I think Doomskar can be spared because UB is strong enough to stand on its own without the tension of having to feed the Eldrazi processors.
We'll run this on Wednesday and see how it goes!
I feel as though I started to stray from the "Hispter" aspect of the cube at some point. Shark Typhoon is very good in the tokens deck, but any blue deck will often grab it because it is so good. Same goes for Stonecoil Serpent.
I suspect Walking Ballistia is also not long for this cube, but I am keeping it in for the moment.
Also, I noticed the the tokens deck needs more defensive speed, so Alirios is back in, and we are welcoming The Birth of Meletis as well.
General's Enforcer was at a good spot on the mana curve, but there just aren't that many humans in White and Black that are Legendary. Ratadrabik sends a better message about Legends mattering, although the signal does get confused with the Zombie aspect.
We'll see how these do!
Definitely killed some sacred cows in this update... I decided to start cutting cards that feel a little cliche, as they work against the "hipster" theme.
Blade Splicer, Grafted Wargear, and Thalia are just a little too ubiquitous. There are some hits to power, but I think that's ultimately ok.
I also am trying to reign in some of the thematic drift (cutting some GW and GB cards that don't support the primary themes in those colors, for example).
I also cut a few of the cards that were designed to be preyed on by the Eldrazi/devoid/ingest deck (since that is the least likely to get new cards any time soon), but I haven't had enough playtesting since I buffed the archetype to see if it's necessary.
I'm excited for the "For Mirrodin!" mechanic, and suspect that it will boost both equipment and tokens.
To that end, I am also pulling a lot of generic equipment, since there are now a ton of equipment/creature hybrid cards in the cube. My one concern is that UR has an artifact/colorless/historic matters theme, which colored artifacts only helps somewhat. There is definitely a loss of synergy. Also, UR payoffs were largely "plenty of mana!", which isn't a great reason to be in the colors. I'm looking to add more diverse payoffs in the future.
Looking forward to testing it out this week and seeing how this goes!
A smattering of good adds from BRO and DMU. I'd still like to increase the asfan of black legends, and am also wondering if Mox Amber or Relic of Legends are worth adding.
Bringing the cube to school tomorrow for my students to draft and I've been meaning to toss in these cards.
Some big changes now that it is summer and I have time to tend to cultivating the cube. I'm adding a few utility lands so that each major archetype has at least one, and NEO had a lot to offer for Red. Some of these cuts were hard, but others surprisingly easy. (I'm not telling which one Yargle was.)
I'm excited to see what impact reconfigure has on the environment!
Mono Green Elves shouldn't make tokens in this cube, in general, although I am still keeping in a couple of notable exceptions for now. Hoping to add more white elves once AFR is out.
Adding a small foretell theme and scrubbing most of the remaining cycling cards. The foretell seems a nice homage to the morph, plus it gives eldrazi a little more play.
