The main attraction of Kaldheim is the MDFC gods. I'm happy to see deities that are not indestructible, and I'm eager to test them out. Modality is ESPECIALLY important in this cube, since MDFCs and Adventure cards are ways to get spells, artifacts, and enchantments into the cube.
Last night's draft was super fun and somewhat instructive. While not exactly a total blowout in any one direction, there were a couple clear issues.
First, and this was known, there are some power outliers. In particular, Prophet, Shinobi, and Batterskull are just too good in a low-removal environment. At 5 mana, they are too deterministic to the game if they cannot be dealt with early/immediately.
Along those lines, Oketra and Glorybringer (again at 5) make immense swings for the person playing them. Both are challenging to deal with - Oketra more so than GB. GB is a card that i've seen a lot in the few drafts we've been able to do, so he gets to linger in the sideboard for a while. Faerie Artisans all but locks your opponent out of the game and as fun as it is to play, it's too much of a feelsbad, especially for only 4 mana.
Originally, Ravenous Chupacabra was a feelsbad, as a reliable 2-for-1 in black. Multiple drafts ended up being Bx matchups where everyone fought for the premium removal in Black. The other colors, however, have since then shown that they have access to sufficient removal/answers, and forcing a Black splash isn't necessary. Time for the Chup to return!
Lastly, Black in particular still needs an added element of card advantage. The Gary player last night was able to establish a decent board presence, but caught the bad side of variance. Being unable to find your finisher is obviously problematic. Black actually has decent card advantage already, but adding a little boost should bring it up where it needs to be.
Lastly, Alesha seems to be a bit of a trap. She was never intended as a build-around, and without the proper support I don't want to create that misleading angle. She's an excellent way to make a Judith-style aggressive deck work, but would need to be properly supported, so she may make a return in the near future - especially if the more traditional 1-drop aggro turns out to be too strong.
