Strong/Staples:
None.
Interest:
Vampire Gourmand (U): A free, repeatable sac outlet that generates card advantage is always interesting, even if it can only be activated once per turn. Compared to something like Dockside Chef, I think I like this more.
Wriggling Grub (U): This is probably the best Doomed Dissenter we’ve gotten as having two bodies is generally better than one. It’s also three triggers in an aristocrats deck. One potential comparison is Mogg War Marshal, which is a longtime Red staple. It also does a decent Reassembling Skeleton impression three times for 1/3 the mana.
Similar:
Infestation Sage (C): A Black Doomed Traveler. Previously, we had both Nested Shambler and Nezumi Linkbreaker and I like Sage more than both of those.
Vengeful Bloodwitch (U): We now have 6+ Blood Artist effects. In 1v1, this is a near-functional reprint of Zulaport Cutthroat, but it commits a crime, so it’s probably better for Forsaken Miner.
Unique/Synergy:
Billowing Shriekmass (U): The base creature isn’t close to playable, but a 4-mana 4/4 flyer is a big game and this one also synergizes with self-mill decks. I think this probably falls just short, but I like it a lot more than Windgrace Acolyte.
Revenge of the Rats (U): You can’t make this card without comparing it to Spider Spawning and I like that we’re getting redundancy in the effect and that it has a significantly cheaper flashback cost, but the tokens coming in tapped means this doesn’t automatically stabilize a losing board like Spawning can. The token sizing/tapped nature is also curious given we also just got Rise of the Varmints.
No Interest:
Arbiter of Woe (U): I like this more than the similar Goremand, but that card isn’t widely played and I think I like Hollow Marauder (which has a similar trigger and a usually easier casting cost) more.
Crypt Feaster (C): A 3/4 menace isn’t good enough for 4-mana and this doesn’t help you achieve Threshold. Compared to Billowing Shriekmass, which has an arguably lower floor, this has a decently lower ceiling and relies heavily on other cards to reach its ceiling.
Gutless Plunderer (C): I initially loved this card because I thought its trigger was Ransack the Lab, but since it doesn’t draw a card, I’m significantly down on it. Not sure it’s even better than Daggerfang Duo.
Hungry Ghoul (C): Probably better in most cubes versus Malevolent Noble, but I think clearly behind Carrion Feeder and Yahenni, Undying Partisan.
Infernal Vessel (U): The “front” creature just isn’t very good. This feels more like an over-costed Brindle Shoat than a cheap 4/3.
MIdnight Snack (U): This is a really unique effect, but I think unless you support a pretty fulsome lifegain deck the numbers here don’t really add up. Activating the Snack using food requires 7 additional mana to deal 6 damage. I think most aggro decks would prefer Ill-Gotten Inheritance. And in a life-gain deck, I’m not sure you really want/need the food tokens.
Nazar, the Velvet Fang (U): Strictly a synergy piece and requires a very synergistic deck to even get close to triggering. Really strong trigger, though.
Ozox, the Clattering King (U): Can’t block is a huge downside here. I’d rather have Cult Conscript and Reassembling Skeleton.
Revoke Demise (C): The flexibility doesn’t make up for neither side being efficient.
Sanguine Syphoner (C): Nearly-functional reprint of Agate-Blade Assassin.
Serpent Assassin (U): Rare downshift from Portal that is just embarrassing versus Shriekmaw.
Scourge of the Undercity (C): A very minor upgrade over Child of Night.
Seeker’s Folly (U): This is to Mind Rot as Gruesome Realization is to Live Fast. I think I prefer Realization as a one-sided Infest-type card that can be “cycled” for new cards whereas against a midrange board in late game (with empty or near-empty hands), neither mode of Folly is great.
Soul-Shackled Zombie (C): We already had Diregraf Scavenger and while this is a more aggressive version of that card, I think most decks would prefer the more consistent and cheaper Vampire Spawn.
Stab (C): Functional reprint of Disfigure. Which figure? Disfigure.
Tragic Banshee (U): A mostly slight improvement over Morkrut Banshee, but we already have Shriekmaw and Gilt-Leaf Winnower, which are less variable.
Vampire Soulcaller (C): I’d rather play Order of Midnight.
