Tithe Taker -> Ajani, Nacatl Pariah
I'm not as excited as some other people about Ajani, but it still seems good. Need to test to see who's right. It's certainly better than Tithe Taker which was just filler. Two bodies for 2 mana totaling 3/3 worth of stats. The token needs to die first to flip Ajani which can be awkward, but not the end of the world. Ajani does seem pretty good in a sacrifice deck as you can control who dies first and then the planeswalker makes more tokens to sac. Also some extra value in a Boros deck being able to deal damage on the back side.
Charming Prince -> Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd
I like this far more than Charming Prince. It kills tokens, removes a blocker each turn, can also take back your stolen cards, or can blink your own stuff for value. Imagine turn 2 flash this in, turn 3 play Blade Splicer. It's also a cute corgi. The downside is that it must attack to trigger and it doesn't get the counter until after combat.
Hard Evidence -> Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student
First blue 1 drop creature worth playing. Very powerful card. Can make lots of clue tokens, flips into a planeswalker pretty easily. Similar to Hard Evidence but way better. The only downside is that Hard Evidence triggers things like Monastery Mentor, but I'm also including Mishra's Bauble in this update which covers that.
Thirst for Knowledge -> Occult Epiphany
Card I missed from a commander deck awhile ago. Thirst for Knowledge hasn't been very exciting lately. I never put it in nonartifact decks and it's not even that great in them. Occult Epiphany is a better card and works in more archetypes. Discarding an artifact creature and a land makes 3 1/1 fliers and sculpts your hand for 3 mana. It works in reanimator as a looting effect and in tempo decks to make fliers and draw at instant speed.
Graf Reaver -> Emperor of Bones
Cutting a filler zombie because Gravecrawler is no longer in the cube. More and more black removal is able to target planeswalkers now, I don't feel the need for a dedicated hate card. Emperor of Bones is a cheap attacker, graveyard hate, and backup reanimation effect.
Liliana, Death's Majesty -> Archpriest of Shadows
Another zombie card to cut. Not a bad card, but overcosted by FIRE standards. Sometimes used as a five mana reanimate, but I think Archpriest of Shadows is a more interesting version of that effect. You have to have a creature to attack with to get the reanimation immediately but I think that makes it more interesting. Unfortunately only hits your graveyard, but then so did Liliana.
Doom Whisperer -> Crabomination
Crabomination is a 3 for 1 with a fun effect. It is competing with other good black cards and I may replace it in the future, but I want to try it out. I don't know how often emerge from artifact will come up, but it does give it extra value in an artifact deck. Doom Whisperer is a generic beater that I don't mind cutting.
Avalanche Riders -> Pyrogoyf
I personally like Flametongue Kavu more but that doesn't mean I can't play both. Importantly it can go face which is a big upside compared to FTK. I would expect it to usually be a 3/4 by turn 4, but I need to test to really see how good it is. Avalanche Riders was way overdue getting cut, but I really like the card so I kept it in for far too long.
Daretti, Scrap Savant -> Flare of Duplication
Another test card. Excited to try this out with Fireblast. It seems pretty good in a mono red or Izzet deck. In response to removal, you can sac the creature that was already going to die to copy whatever card they were playing.
Zurgo Bellstriker -> Kumano Faces Kakkazan
Swapping 1 drops. Kumano has been good in constructed aggro and I think it's more interesting that Zurgo. You have to wait one extra turn to attack, but you get a lot of extra stuff. It's also a noncreature spell for things like Monastery Swiftspear.
Duskwatch Recruiter -> Springheart Nantuko
Complicated card to parse through. On landfall:
It fills the board with 1/1s, synergies with lands, late game you can copy things, bestow gives a bit of board wipe insurance. I never really liked Duskwatch Recruiter, but I like having a couple cheap value generators in green and I think Springheart Nantuko is better.
Jewel Thief -> Sandstorm Salvager
I missed most cards from The Big Score when they came out. I'm very excited about this one. It synergizes with blink, Birthing Pod, Flare of Cultivation, and other sacrifice effects. The activated ability works with token makers like Deranged Hermit and Esika's Chariot. It's also just a good 3 drop in any green deck. Jewel Thief was just filler and I'm happy to take it out.
Cultivate -> Flare of Cultivation
Not a huge swap. The extra green pip could be bad, but I think the upside will come up far more often. There's not a ton of green creatures that are great to sac. The best ones are probably Sandstorm Salvager, Reclamation Sage, anything with Tireless Tracker or Springheart Nantuko out, a mana dork on turn 1 if you're worried about it getting removed and need 3 mana next turn. You can just cast it normally and not worry about losing your creature.
Thief of Sanity -> Psychic Frog
My favorite card from the set. Amazing tempo threat, discard outlet for reanimator, card draw makes it good even in pure control, interesting mindgames of whether or not to discard. All around great card. Cutting Thief of Sanity because frog does what it does but better.
Trygon Predator -> Planar Genesis
Purely filler. Trygon Predator has been in the cube since it's inception and at the time there weren't very many good Simic cards. Now Simic has some pretty good options but most of them are 3 mana. Without fast mana, Trygon doesn't often have many targets except against a dedicated artifact deck. That makes it far too narrow to really be excited about. Planar Genesis isn't anything interesting but an Impulse that can ramp is good in decks with high synergy or combos. Probably will cut this as soon as they print a better card that isn't 3 mana.
Escape to the Wilds -> Bloodbraid Challenger
I love Bloodbraid Elf, but it's not quite good enough at this power level. Extra mana means you can cascade into 4 drops and escape makes it better later in the game. Escape to the Wilds is also a good card. I'm curious to see how this one will do.
Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger -> Cityscape Leveler
Ulamog is great when you hard cast it, but outside of channel that's pretty difficult to do. Exiling the top 20 can just win the game all by itself in grindy matchups, but against fast decks doesn't do anything. Cityscape Leveler isn't the most powerful thing to cheat in, but it is still quite strong. It works with Tinker, Sneak Attack, and green ramp.
Duplicant -> Mishra's Bauble
Mishra's Bauble has a lot of little synergies that make me want to play it. It's amazing in combination with Lurrus of the Dream Den, it's a cheap artifact for things like Tinker and Urza, Lord High Artificer, a noncreature spell for Monastery Mentor and friends, enables delirium if I ever add that. Duplicant was a filler card in an artifact or mono green deck, however Cityscape Leveler should be better in that role.
