We actually drafted this thing! In the CubeCon server, thanks to Joe rounding up folks, we had a full 8 during the draft and 3 rounds of games. Games were fun, albeit long, and we've found a few things to try for the future:
We drafted 3 packs of 15, and I think with the addition of the free sideboard cards, that turns out to be option overload across games. First, we're reducing pack size to 14, as most cards are good in most decks. Second the starting kit will not be 5 lessons anymore, but one Environmental Sciences and one Mascot Spell of the player's choice. Introduction to Annihilation could destroy the Spell Satchel (oops!) and the other two are less relevant to every deck, so I am adding two copies of each to the mainboard. Speaking of the backpack, free Spell Satchel played great, allowing multi-spelling early and keeping hands full.
Brigone, Soldier of Meletis and Arasta of the Endless Web were too strong! Trying some different Heroic-type cards in their places. I also thought Standard Procedure would be a funny inclusion, but it turns out to add literally 500 decision points to every Learn action and that's not fun. Lets try a slightly more iconic colorless spell in the slot. Watchlist: Ishi-Ishi, Akki Crackshot. I love this guy, but is he too punishing?
I also loved having individual members of Rare Spell cycles like Red Sun's Zenith, Yahenni's Expertise, and Beacon of Tomorrows be cool and powerful here. I'd like to continue that trend by adding a Flare, Twilight, March, and Inscription to the list, giving us expanded access to a history of the iconic spells from across the Multiverse. The one thing I'm cutting that was very cool was Spelltwine, but we have Arcane Heist and Mizzix's Mastery playing similar roles, and multi-target phasing is a cool offensive and defensive option to give Blue.
Overall, a quite successful first draft! Looking forward to more!
A few new cool spell options. I don't actually think I like any of the Omens here, which will at least prevent Omen <> Adventure confusion. Duress turns out to be a worse Psychic Spear. Go Blank is so brutal I want to try a different effect with similar outcome. I have given up on The Unspeakable being playable, but Taigam seems neat!
The Snarls were very Strixhaven, but that's only half the cycle. The Ravnica Bouncelands actually have a number of little synergies here including giving you lands back to Retrace and returning MDFC land spells to your hand for casting.
Revisiting this project after drafting Stormtime by @MJGrenier. Cutting out the Splice onto Arcane cards which were likely to be damaging to gameplay, upping the creature density in Red, removing all Enchantments and the one creature which could destroy the Spell Satchel.
