Early 2025 Update

Greetings all! I will be continuing to update this cube for the foreseeable future, but at a slower cycle than my 540 signed cube. My intention is that this will be a more polished/stable cube while I use the larger cube to test out newer cards.

For this update I wanted to make two theme changes:

  1. Slightly reduce token generators/payoffs.
  2. Introduce graveyard matters. This does not mean the addition of a reanimation package, but rather I want to experiment with adding cards that care about being in the graveyard or other cards being in the graveyard. Also, a lot more ‘goyfs.

Most of the other changes are focused on swapping in cards that offer more modality/flexibility.

w White w

Intrepid Adversary -> Virtue of Loyalty: Greater modality. Helps break stalls.
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar -> The Wandering Emperor: The Wandering Emperor offers more interesting play.
Hero of Bladehold -> Timeless Dragon: Support for graveyard matters and token generator reduction.

u Blue u

Sower of Temptation -> Sphinx of Forgotten Lore: Additional support for graveyard matters.

b Black b

Tenacious Underdog -> Barrowgoyf: Additional support for graveyard matters.
Bitterblossom -> Deep-Cavern Bat: Token generator reduction.
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician -> Nethergoyf: Support for graveyard matters and token payoff reduction.
Phyrexian Fleshgorger -> Shriekmaw: The return of a classic.
Virtue of Persistence -> Chthonian Nightmare: Watching this change. The energy restriction should keep it from being abused.

r Red r

Goblin Rabblemaster -> Squee, Dubious Monarch: Additional support for graveyard matters.
Hellrider -> Pyrogoyf: Support for graveyard matters and token generator reduction.
Inferno Titan -> Overlord of the Boilerbilges: More modality.
Sulfuric Vortex -> Kellan, Planar Trailblazer: The cube really wanted another 1 mana red creature and Sulfuric Vortex felt a little out of place.

g Green g

Thragtusk -> Balustrade Wurm: Additional support for graveyard matters.
Once Upon a Time -> Malevolent Rumble: Additional support for graveyard matters.
Legolas's Quick Reflexes -> Ursine Monstrosity: Additional support for graveyard matters. Honorary ‘goyf.

wubrg Multicolor wubrg

Fallen Shinobi -> Psychic Frog: Psychic Frog is extremely strong.
Gev, Scaled Scorch -> Bloodtithe Harvester: Token payoff reduction.
Mosswood Dreadknight -> Deathrite Shaman: Additional support for graveyard matters.

Should have made this change a while ago. Phelia is a great build around.

Not much this time. Gev should be a better fit for the cube.

Sensei's Divining Top > Lavaspur Boots: Top is a bit of a filler card. The Boots are great early and late game.

Torrential Gearhulk > Smirking Spelljacker: Cheaper casting, evasion, and more interesting interaction.

Earthshaker Khenra > Slickshot Show-Off: Slickshot is more impactful the longer it stays on the battlefield.

Headliner Scarlett > Hellrider: Headliner Scarlett was fine, but Hellrider is ultimately stronger.

More Artifact Support

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

Working on making U/X artifacts viable.

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

Slight tweak with a little more synergy.

w White

Overall white is in good shape with solid aggro options and multiple planeswalkers supporting midrange.

I am interested in adding additional blink options such as Flickerwisp and Ephemerate, but I do not have any great cuts outside of maybe Hero of Bladehold.

u Blue

Blue is the king of tempo, but tends to be a support color.

Whirler Rogue replaces Urza, Lord High Artificer: Urza is a build around, but there is not enough artifact synergy to make it work reliably. Whirler Rogue is great in a lot of decks.

Kitesail Larcenist replaces Aether Channeler: Aether Channeler is solid, but a bit underwelming. Kitesail gives blue a new removal option and has some interesting use cases to convert your own creature/artifact into a treasure.

Phyrexian Metamorph replaces Subtlety: I want to retry Phyrexian Metamorph, especially with the artifact section of the cube improving in power. Subtlety is fine, but blue is in pretty good shape in terms of counters.

b Black

Black drops the experiments in reanimation (Recurring Nightmare) and aristocrats (Bloodghast, Woe Strider, and Yawgmoth, Thran Physician). Both strategies are valid, but needed more support to work reliably.

Removed Baleful Mastery to move Dismember back into black.

Instead, Black refocuses into attrition and resilient creatures. Black uses life as a resource, so some of the changes add life gain to help counteract:

Tenacious Underdog: Solid aggro card that comes back while generating card advantage.
Phyrexian Fleshgorger: Hard to kill, adds needed lifegain, and will be played fairly the majority of the time.
Sheoldred, the Apocalypse: Previously "banned", but safer with Wheel of Fortune removed. Hard for Red to deal with, but removal has gotten better in other colors in the cube.
Liliana, the Last Hope: Removal and fair recursion.

r Red

Red has a little difficulty with large creatures and may need a bit of a boost on artifact removal. Otherwise, it is in good shape.

Sulfuric Vortex replaces Wheel of Fortune: Wheel of Fortune was removed due to Orcish Bowmasters and Sheoldred, the Apocalypse. Vortex is a classic and helps Red overcome lifegain and stalls.

g Green

Green is solidly set in ramp.

Old One Eye replaces Gruff Triplets: Gruff Triplets was too resilient than I liked. Old One Eye offers a similar play pattern and is less difficult to deal with.

wubrg Multicolored

Pretty good overall. G/W needs work.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger replaces Molten Collapse: I want to give Kroxa another try.
Fallen Shinobi replaces Kaito Shizuki: Kaito is solid, but a bit bland. Fallen Shinobi seems more fun.
Kitchen Finks replaces King Darien XLVIII: I guess?

1 Colorless

Looking good. Wurmcoil Engine returns in the open slot from Dismember moving.

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

Parallel change. Old One Eye is a bit more easier to interact with, while having similar upside.

Hopefully last one?

Shorikai, Genesis Engine > Teferi, Hero of Dominaria: Going back to an old standard.

Abundant Harvest > Legolas's Quick Reflexes: Legolas's Quick Reflexes offers massive flexibility for a combat trick (bite, counterspell, and/or reach). Abundant Harvest is solid, but less exciting.

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

Stern Scolding is good, but with the inclusion of a few more powerful planeswalkers, Miscalculation's value increases.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger > Molten Collapse: With the addition of more powerful planeswalkers, removal is a premium pick. The second mode of Molten Collapse will only be occasionally relevant, but hitting a Skullclamp can be very strong.

Winota, Joiner of Forces > Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon: Winota is arguably stronger, but Anim Pakal does not have the tribal limitations of Winota and is more aggressive.

Bloodthirsty Adversary > Inti, Seneschal of the Sun: The loss of haste is not ideal, but Inti scales better as the game goes on than Bloodthirsty Adversary.

Oracle of Mul Daya > Sentinel of the Nameless City: Sentinel has a much better body than Oracle of Mul Daya, while still providing quasi-card draw and top of deck manipulation.

Soul Partition > Get Lost: Get lost hits a few more targets than Fateful Absence and the map tokens can be less of a downside than giving your opponent a clue. Soul Partition hitting artifacts is a major upside, but the ability to recast the permanent is not ideal.

Engineered Explosives > Bitter Triumph: Bitter Triumph is extremely flexible and Dismember is moved to the colorless section. Engineered Explosives is strong, but often a sideboard card.

With the expanded cube, testing some previously "banned" cards.
