Mixed up Experimental Synthesizer and Mishra's Research Desk in my head and in my original update.
One missed swap from The Objection that brings the complete change to 43 cards in and 43 cards out.
I am finally doing it. You mad lads (and ladies) made me do it. I am finally objectifying my cube in a process I am calling “The Objection.”
What is “The Objection?”
The Objection is a 43 (!) card swap to emphasize artifact tokens and spells that create artifact tokens. The new cards include some powerful spells that are being optimized and support cards to surround them.
What are these powerful spells?
The most intriguing spells (to me) are Ensoul Artifact/Zoetic Glyph, Sokenzan Smelter, Cloakwood Swarmkeeper/Woodland Champion, and Piston Sledge. All 6 of these spells have glowing reviews for their power level.
How about the other 37 swaps?
There are some other interesting build-around cards being included. Builder’s Talent and Cat Collector in White. Marauding Mako, Scrounging Skyray, Collector’s Vault, Improbable Alliance and more for a Izzet Draw/Discard package. Tough Cookie along with a platter of Food token makers. There are also some new tools for sacrifice decks which include a ninth Conspiracy- Sentinel Dispatch!
Is that everything coming in?
A majority of the new spells coming in are replacement level spells that provide the support needed for everything else to pack a punch. Spells like Barbed Spike, Deduce, Shelob’s Ambush, Experimental Synthesizer, Bakersbane Duo, and Urza’s Bauble. The bad news is many of these cards are a bit subpar per the standard of my Cube, but I think they will provide decent support for the powerful build arounds. The good news is that this category of support cards is always expanding, so there is lots of room to tinker around the edges.
How about the Self Bounce spells?
For now, those are staying on the sidelines. There have been a lot of undeniable self bounce spells that have been added recently, like Nurturing Pixie, Sunpearl Kirin and Essence Reliquary. This category is one where I expect a lot of growth over the years.
Otherwise, I have minimized their inclusion to reduce repetition within games. Also, a lot of the new cards being added are non-permanent spells which create tokens. This brings down the upside ceiling of a Kor Skyfisher or Fear of Isolation. TTABE would be the next card up, were I to expand this category.
Which spells are being swapped out?
Mostly replacement level cards, although I am sad to report a few of my favorite themes are being impacted on the bottom end.
Spellslinger - Most of the cuts here are cheaper creatures and the least-powerful of the expensive payoffs. Eddymurk Crab and Khenra Spellspear can stay while Tolarian Terror and Heartfire Immolator leave.
Graveyard - The cuts here are the expensive enablers (like Renegade Reaper and Skull Prophet) and the weaker payoffs (Chitin Gravestalker and Elvish Regrower).
Snow - Sadly, the deep frost of many older Snow cards is over. Power creep has invalidated some of the Coldsnap and Kaldheim payoffs. Not to worry, Skred and Icehide Golem (and many more) will remain.
What are your overall thoughts about The Objection?
I had thought for a long time that the overall power level of my cube, especially the powerful removal, would invalidate a lot of the object payoffs. I have come around in two important ways.
I think there was a large number of replacement level cards in my Cube and the overall power level will see an increase with these swaps. Zoetic Glyph has a WAY higher ceiling than Psionic Blast.
Feedback from my peers, especially in the Peasant Cube Discord, has shown me that pockets of support are enough to add these new cards. Zoetic Glyph might need 5 support cards instead of 12 in a deck.
While I do not expect the lofty success that many of the object payoffs see in unpowered Peasant, I expect some great things.
I am a little worried about high volatility due to the required level of support these payoffs need. How good is a Sokenzan Smelter that needs to sacrifice actual cards instead of tokens? What value does Deduce have as a pure card draw spell?
Even with these questions left to answer, I am still very excited for The Objection. I am committing myself to The Objection through the end of 2025, but I expect things to become permanent.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm is here and there are a few excellent cards worth considering.
All of the new Tarkir swaps are replacing very similar cards (including the departing Overrun, which is still my favorite card ever).
The non-Tarkir swaps focus on two themes: Adding more board control cards with Behold the Unspeakable and Night Clubber and removing the clunky Persist combo cards. All in all, I think these changes will streamline relevant decks.
Forgot to include this swap of an old green 7 for a new green 6.
Despite a disappointing start, Ætherdrift finished quite strong with a number of interesting cards for Peasant. A LOT of them feature the cycling mechanic, so the most interesting question is whether or not Cycling 2 (or 3) is a viable backup plan in this era of cube.
Otherwise, there are a bunch of 7-drops cutting get for 6-drops, as the ramp and reanimation decks focus on more synergy instead of a single, big threat.
There are another 9 swaps based on 2024 Peasant Cube fallout that focus in two real categories:
A massive 28 card update designed to add some popular cards I have missed and some overperformers not previously considered. Here are the broad strokes of these updates:
Sacrifice Decks: Trying to find some cheaper enablers that help the go-wide Mardu decks playing offensively instead of attrition based.
Green Aggro: Green is my most troublesome color because I really dislike the green 4 and 5 mana creatures for aggro decks. Instead, trying to shift from ramp to aggro at lower mana values with Evolving Adaptive, Aloe Alchemist, Saddled Rimestag, and Jewel Thief.
Also moved some more ramp into the artifact section.
Circuit Mender: I have publically disliked this card as a boring-aggro stopper, but I think almost all my 2-mana creatures have a gameplan to either trade with, attack around, or provide value through Circuit Mender. Hopefully, the 2s are powerful enough.
Essence Reliquary- Spring-Loaded Sawblades and Hunter's Talent, looking for Essence Reliquary to shine without overpowering.
Cool Cards- Steadfast Unicorn, Neighborhood Guardian, Osseous Sticktwister, Heartfire Hero, Reckless Detective, and Sibylline Soothsayer get chances to prove their value in the fast-paced world of the Peasant Snow Cube.
Fingers crossed that all my orders pan out and I receive these two super cool cards I ordered.
Adding them now to make the deadline for Peasant Cube 2024.
Trying a few more swaps from Foundations based on same early draft results and prior vibes.
Foundations is here and offers quite a few good, cheap creatures and upgrades on existing effects.
No real theme changes here, but I am trying to find room for more creatures spells in black specifically.
A much larger update is pending the 2024 Average Peasant Cube release.
Sheltered by Ghosts was a fringe card after spoiler season and now also looks to be excellent in retail Duskmourn. Excited to try this out in replacement of a more expensive removal option.
Making a lot of adjustments from Duskmourn, 15 in total! The set is very high on power from cheap spells and that has influenced the changes.
The only big theme change is the removal of the landfall creatures. Adding the 10 tri-fetches from MH3 did not provide the overall power boost I was seeking. Besides that, I wanted to find one more 1-drop in white and red to push the Boros 2-power theme.
Finally adding Brightblade Shoat, since that card was exceedingly powerful in Bloomburrow draft.
Swapping out a 2nd tier card from an archetype I do not support (Blink) for a 2nd tier card in an archetype I do support (Spells).
10 new cards from Bloomburrow sprout up into Cube and they are all pretty solid. Blue gets the bulk of new cards with 4, but every color sees something new.
No big changes in theme, but tinkering around the edges with the token cards in Mardu colors. Case of the Gateway Express and Chimney Rabble are likely upgrades to those slots, but Shambling Ghast and Fear, Fire, Foes! works in the other direction.
Also, a LOT of the non-MH3 cards that came in as a companion to the 10 Landscapes are on the hotseat. Landfall creatures, Brainstorm, DRC, and Erinis will be monitored for upcoming drafts.
Adding a small handful of cards from Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed. Origin of the Hidden Ones looks like an All-Star, and a few other supporting cards who need to prove their value.
Between Origin and Ghostfire Slice, there is more direct damage that goes face than before. I think this is a necessary increase in power levels for Peasant Cube, but worth monitoring.
Adding Amped Raptor without extra energy support because it is a card with a high ceiling in only a very specific aggro deck. Considered (and declined) Galvanic Discharge and Static Prison.
Wanted to push the fixing land percentage back up and noted the Signets were less cubed than the Karoos as of the 2023 Cube Year End survey.
Fixing lands are up to 13.3% (68/512) and getting synergies with the Karoos and the new MDFCs will be cool.
Cutting Signets has the side effect of weakening big multi-color ramp piles. Interested to see how cutting Signets impacts the artifact removal.
Also cutting Reasseming Skeleton for Retrofitted Transmogrant, the 1 drop with the beefier recursion ability.
Moving the dual MDFCs into the land category, as I will be treating them as dual lands with spell upsides.
Here are all 39 (!) Modern Horizons 3 cards being added into the cube. This set represents a huge shift in themes represented here, and amongst the other 13 non-MH3 cards being added.
Landscapes- This large 10 card cycle gives 14 fetch lands of some variety in the fixing base, allowing for better use of Landfall, Delirium, Delve, Revolt, return land effects, shuffle effects, and even more. Some of those synergies are among the spells being added from MH3, but even more are found in the earlier changes.
MDFCs- Having a series of mono-colored MDFCs with lands that can enter untapped is a huge upside compared to guaranteed ETBT lands. These 5 attached spells being added should be strong enough to bring extra power to decks.
+1/+1 counters- Extra emphasis on this existing theme amongst the Selesnya color pair. Metastatic Evangel will be another strong enabler, and the new payoff cards are excellent.
Power Levels- Besides these focused themes, there are some mega powerful one-off cards. Ghostfire Slice is one of the best burn spells, period. Marionette Apprentice is an excellent sacrifice payoff/enabler that will likely get stronger over time. Malevolent Rumble is on the level of Satyr Wayfinder for the graveyard decks. Emrakul's Messenger has excellent upside for a 2-mana creature.
All in all, it will be difficult, if not impossible for another set to have this type of impact on Peasant Cube. That is, until Modern Horizons 4.
Moving some lands over to Colorless to have the Lands count represent specifically fixing lands.
