On Reddit in r/mtgcube we've been selecting the card suggested by the top comment. What is resulting is a community project where the mob decides the additions through Reddit's upvote feature. The cube has now completed with 365 cards representing each day it was intended to run.
Due to circumstances, including a protest regarding API usage, this did not go particularly smoothly. For the majority of the cube's creation, 2 cards were added each day. Generally, the weekdays were in WUBRG order (with Green being Friday), and the weekends being for wildcards, but these were only a structure used by the community and there were no hard rules.
- Flicker.:: Get multiple uses of ETB triggers, and fill the board with artifact tokens for affinity or a large 4/4 army
- Unearth. Mana value 3 or less matters, historic, enchantments matter and some graveyard play allow for a resilient color pairing with options for building
- Artifact Creatures. Use keywords like Reconfigure and Modular to have the aggressive pairing beat down those trying to durdle too hard.
- Tokens Matter. Tokens of many kinds, be it creatures, artifact or otherwise come together.
- Graveyard Control. The stubborn pairing, where cards will be back for 2nd servings.
- Spells Matter. A more artifact heavy version of an old classic.
- Clues/Draw 2 matter. Ramp + Draw like any good Simic drafter, but do so with timeliness and you will likely be rewarded.
- Sacrifice. Your own creatures (and artifacts!) are only tools for your opponents suffering.
- Food/Lifegain. While there is food support in other colors too, Golgari can live for a long time and grind out games particularly well
- Modified. It's not just infinite tokens we are fiddling with. This pairing also cares about +1/+1 counters and equipment/auras for modified.
WUBRG- Golems. Live the dream, make a 3/3, then make 7 more.
Expections might be that I would go through WUBRG when discussing the individual colors, but with how well defined and redundant Red already is, it's much easier to talk about.
Need a hasty 1 drop? We have 3 if you include Gingerbrute. Need an equipment who starts as a creature, we have 3 if you include Nettlecyst.
In a world of dinky artifacts (Red has Voldaren Epicure) the idea of hitting your opponent immediately has obvious upside. Get your opponent having to make hard decisions about popping a food/clue or playing to board because their life total is at risk stands to be Red's niche.
The most thematic red card might be Lizard Blades. Three things you can already do:
-Equip to Bomat Courier and get twice as many cards under it
Red will always be strong in an artifact heavy cube since it's a color that almost always gets artifact support, but I'm happy to see we are insistent on a low curve and punching face too.
