Welcome to the Donski Peasant Cube of the Century!

This is the first cube I built in paper, finishing the first official draft back in June of 2021. Scroll down for a breakdown of deck archetypes in the cube.

How will my cube be played?

My cube will be played with my local playgroup, and will be typically drafted by 6-8 people. The players in my playgroup have a wide range of experience with Magic, and more specifically cube draft. My playgroup mainly plays commander, but we’ve been playing more cube recently. 8 player drafts will be done with 3 15-card booster packs. If there are less than 8 players, drafts will be done with 5 9-card booster packs.

What are my restrictions?

This is a Peasant cube, so all of the cards have been printed at one time as a common or uncommon. I break this rarity restriction for nonbasic lands. There is no restriction on when the cards are printed, so this is technically a Vintage Peasant cube. I don’t play some specific Peasant-legal cards for power level reasons, i.e. Skullclamp, Grafted Wargear, Force of Will, Demonic Tutor etc.

How powerful do I want my cube to be?

I want my cube to be a little above average when it comes to power level of Peasant cubes. I’ve included some of my favorite cards at this rarity level, like Young Pyromancer, Ponder, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Syr Konrad the Grim, and Soulherder. I have a list of “built-in” archetypes that are present in the cube listed below, but players should feel free to explore building whatever deck they imagine. There is currently 1 combo that players can build, specifically around the Murderous Redcap Persist combo.

How does my ideal environment play?

I want games to be interactive, where each player (if they’ve drafted relatively well) has the ability to answer the threats their opponents play while also playing “must answer” threats of their own. I don’t want games to drag on too long, so each deck should look to include some threats that will almost assuredly win them the game if left unchecked. The draft should be fairly varied in nature, because the variance of Magic is one of my favorite aspects of the game. All decks that my drafters make should fall along some line of the typical Aggro-Midrange-Control curve.

This cube is still very much a work in progress. I’ve found that white, red and green are the strongest colors, so the more recent updates have been looking to address that, specifically looking to give the slower decks (graveyard/reanimator/control/spells matter) more of a fighting chance.

Macro-Archetypes
wbr Aggro
wubrg Midrange

br – Aristocrats / Aggro

rg – Big Lads / Ramp

gw – Tokens / +1/+1 Counters

wb - Mid-range Reanimator / Sacrifice / Tokens

ur – Spells Matter / Prowess / Card Draw

bg – Graveyard Value

rw – Burn / Tokens / Go Wide

gu – Mid-range Value Engine

Here's some other strategies that can be built!

wbrg – Persist Combo

My cube contains a few ways of building a persist combo built around Murderous Redcap. You will need the Redcap, a card that puts +1/+1 counters on a creature when they enter the battlefield, and a sacrifice outlet (preferably one that can be done without paying mana). Renata, Called to the Hunt, Grumgully, the Generous, and Good-Fortune Unicorn fulfill the +1/+1 counter part of the combo, and then [Carrion Feeder]], Nantuko Husk, Fallen Angel and Goblin Bombardment are free sacrifice outlets. There are other sacrifice outlets in the cube that cost a mana or two, so there’s ways to build sacrifice decks with Murderous Redcap in them that might not go infinite, but can still be extremely potent.
