I've been managing this cube for over 10 years, and it's the original reason my game group got together (just drafting it every week, so this cube has seen a lot more play than most cubes). It's legacy legal but I'm going for more of a modern (maybe even a little less) power level. Rather than a collection of good cards, I try to load the cube up with fun and interesting archetypes, and follow all my philosophies on good gameplay to make this a great format. I take everything into account:

  • I'm paying attention to how much of a basic keyword like first strike or flying is popping up, and I try to not have many cards that bog down the board and make combat clunky and unfun

  • I'm extremely intentional about protection, hexproof, indestructible, etc. so that for the most part it's very interactive and threats are able to be dealt with

  • I like control, but I want it to be at least a little more than draw-go. My choices in counterspells and board wipes, as well as the amount of planeswalkers in the cube are all deliberate. I want control decks to be a little more like when I first started where they had to have maybe a heavy beater like grave titan or something to finish and not just emblem or extra turn the opponent out

  • With my cube getting played plenty, I get to watch it like a hawk. If I see something over/under performing I'm on it. I'm trying out some powerful cards in the cube right now for more exciting strategies, but the health of the format comes first if I have to end up taking anything out
