This is a cube where players permanently alter the cards in the cube. After each draft, the players get two "mods"; special cards that change a card in some way, as long as it fits the requirements for modification. All base cards in the cube are commons and uncommons, but by adding mods, slowly but surely the power level of the cube creeps up, and the best alters can easily go toe to toe with rares, or even mythics. Every draft ends with a snake draft containing a number of mods equal to two plus twice the number of drafters. This ensures that the player who gets first pick still has some choice once the snake draft gets back to them. There are two general rules for applying mods. * **Forced altering rule:** Drafted mods *must* be applied to a card in the drafter's card pool. * In the unlikely case that a there are no eligible cards in the card pool for any given mod, a replacement will be drawn at random from among the leftover basic mods until a mod is drawn that *can* be applied. * Basic mods can be recognized by the type line and the common set symbol. * **Two mod rule:** Each card can be modded by no more than two mods, both as a means to curb power outliers and a way to increase the number of cards modded. * Double mods count as two mods, thus filling up the maximum of two mods on their own. * A double mod can be recognized by the double stars in the card name, the type line, and the mythic set symbol. * Double mods can't be applied to cards with an existing single mod. Each mod card consists of the following parts (with some parts being optional). * **Name and art:** These are purely for flavor, with no rules baggage attached. I like it when my cards look nice! * **Type line:** The type line dictates what card types and colors the mod can alter. * A card must match the indicated card type, if any. * A card must match the color indicator, if any. * A card matches the color indicator if it is colorless or at least *one* of the colors in the color indicator. * Border color is an additional indicator for which colors a mod can alter. * **Rules text:** The main part of the mod card, that describes in which way a card is altered. * Some mods will stipulate nontext modifications, additional limitations, or give an example to clarify. These appear in italics, below a flavor bar if the mod also alters the rules text. * **P/T Box:** Some mods alter the power and toughness of the modded creature. The change is reflected in the P/T box. If we look at the examples above, we can see that Power Up! is a mod that can apply to any creature, regardless of color. It will increase the power of the creature by +1. Because it is a single mod, a creature altered by Power Up! can be altered by another mod in the future. Strike a Bargain, on the other hand, is a double mod. It can alter any nonland card, reducing all costs by {1} (including, but not limited to, the casting cost and activation costs of abilities). Servo and Protect, finally, is a mod that can alter any colorless, white, or black creature card (including multicolor cards that are at least white or black like, for example, a {g/w} card). As specified, the creature must have at least 2 toughness though. This mod will grant the modded card the Fabricate 2 ability, but it will also reduce the power and toughness of the creature by -2/-1. >>> ## Heritage Champions <<< Mod cards may be the heart and soul, but the ultimate way to mod a card in the cube is by winning a draft. To the victor go the spoils, and as a reward the champion may alter any one card in their card pool World Champion-style. This counts as a single mod (so even a champion can't alter a card that's already double modded). Just like in real life, the champion's design is hashed out with the final authority, moi, the cube curator. The range of effects available is way larger than the standard pool of mods though, so there is plenty of room to get creative! As a final touch, the winner gets to rename the card, and their win is immortalized in the flavor text.
